Alex Castle, head distiller at Old Dominick Distillery, will be responsible for Memphis’ only brand of Tennessee whiskey and bourbon when the Downtown facility is up and running later this year.

A block-wide warehouse at 301 S. Front St. is getting new life as the Old Dominick Distillery. When it opens to the public in December, the distillery will brew and bottle two kinds of vodkas and three kinds of whiskey. Plans for the historic 54,000-square-foot warehouse include two tasting rooms, a rooftop patio, restaurant and retail area in addition to best-in-class equipment.

KNOXVILLE – University of Tennessee football coach Butch Jones doesn’t have to remind his team about the disappointing fade last November.

UT went 0-3 to start what has historically been its best month of football. First, the Vols lost to Missouri and Auburn. Then a 14-10 loss to Vanderbilt in Neyland Stadium knocked the Vols out of bowl eligibility.

An affiliate of D. Canale & Co. has bought the Downtown property where it will develop a spirits distillery and public tasting room.

Evidence for the attractiveness of Downtown’s South Main neighborhood can be found in any of several corners.

One example is at 314 S. Main St., where Café Pontotoc opened its doors about two weeks ago. Owners Milton and Cherie Lamb wanted to establish a comfortable neighborhood bar that serves wine, local beers and small plates in a setting where patrons get used to coming in to unwind.

Investment group 301 WA LTD LLC of Arizona purchased the assets from Gregory Realty GP. Brian Califf of NAI Saig Co. represented the seller.

Ted Sullivan, general manager of Gus's Fried Chicken at 310 S. Front St., couldn't see the future of the neighborhood surrounding his restaurant when Gus's opened almost five years ago.

"When we first went in here, we had no idea the Forum was going in. That has brought us enormous amounts of business," Sullivan said. "You add in all these new houses and then condos across the street and on both sides, and we're going to have so many people down here - and it can do nothing but help us out."

Case filings saw a spring slowdown in area courts during the second quarter, with decreases in filings almost across the board when compared with the same period last year. Shelby County Chancery Court and the Circuit Court of Tennessee for the 30th Judicial District at Memphis each saw a drop in activity, according to The Daily News Online, www.memphisdailynews.com.
