National Civil Rights Museum will host a lunch and learn with Daphene McFerren, director of The Benjamin Hooks Institute at the University of Memphis, Wednesday, Nov. 19, from noon to 1 p.m. at the museum, 450 Mulberry St. The topic is “Freedom’s Front Line: The Voting Rights Struggle in Fayette County, Tenn.” Cost is free; bring your own lunch. 4. Countywide School Board Meets Tuesday on Budget -

Countywide school board members should complete their work on a budget for the new fiscal year when they meet Tuesday, June 11, in a special session.

On the agenda for the 5:30 p.m. meeting at the Teaching and Learning Academy, 2485 Union Ave., is approval of a budget resolution.

5. Schools Budget Gap At $35.7 Million In New Budget Draft -

The countywide school board should have a budget proposal ready for the Shelby County Commission by the end of this week. And as it stands now, it would require just under $36 million in new funding.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department in conjunction with area companies and organizations will present a workplace violence prevention seminar Tuesday, May 22, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Agricenter International, 7777 Walnut Grove Road. Cost is free.

13. Election Commission Says No To Municipal Schools Referenda -

The Shelby County Election Commission says requests to put referenda on the ballot May 10 to create municipal school districts are “procedurally defective.”

The unanimous voice vote by the commission Wednesday, March 21, sets the stage for a possible legal challenge of the decision by suburban leaders in Chancery Court.

18. MCS Television Station Awarded $10,000 Grant -

The Memphis City Schools television station, C19 TV, has received a $10,000 grant from Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation and SkillsUSA.

The grant will help fund a new television studio set for MCS students to use as part of their curriculum this fall.
