7. Barbecue Restaurant Scene Heats Up in Memphis -

Memphis has enjoyed a bumper crop of barbecue restaurant news in recent weeks, from tweaks to some business’ existing locations and plans by others to expand. And that trend isn’t letting up anytime soon.

The Memphis Air Show will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 13-14, at Memphis-Millington Airport, 8101 Hornet Ave. Gates will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with flying performances from noon to 4:30 p.m. Featured performances include the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and Leap Frogs, an Air Force F-16 Viper demonstration, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds and CF-18 Hornet demonstration teams, the Shockwave Jet Truck and more. 13. FedEx Decides Not to Renew a Renaissance Center Lease -

FedEx has decided not to renew a lease at a prominent East Memphis office building.

FedEx Services is not renewing a roughly 11,000-square-foot lease at the 189,644-square-foot Renaissance Center office building at 1715 Aaron Brenner Drive that expires Oct. 1. Employees affected by the decision will be moved to FedEx facilities, part of a broader consolidation and efficiency plan the company has been pursuing.

14. Developer Tries Again for Highland McDonald’s -

The developer behind a proposed McDonald’s on Highland Avenue near the University of Memphis is making another attempt at the project.

According to the most current site plan, the 5,353-square-foot restaurant building is situated along the sidewalk on Highland and a looping drive-thru proposed earlier has been replaced with one that runs along the eastern side of the building.

15. Olymbec Acquires 13-Building Bellbrook -

Olymbec USA LLC has snatched up two more key Memphis properties, including the 1.8 million-square-foot Bellbrook industrial park.

16. Hollywood Feed Expands, Renews Local Leases -

Hollywood Feed has renewed and expanded two of its Memphis locations.

The Memphis-based natural and holistic pet food merchant is growing its 2648 Broad Ave. warehouse from 44,400 square feet to 77,763 square feet.

17. Midtown Momentum -

The Midtown real estate market has long been an anomaly compared to its Bluff City counterparts, with fundamentals as diverse as its demographics.

“The types of real estate that you’ll find in Midtown can be some of the most expensive or some of the most modest when it comes to prices and facility,” said Gary Myers of Gary Myers Co. “Retail in particular.”

18. Lease Takes Appling Farms to Capacity -

A distributorship of Pella Corp. has inked 11,300 square feet in Appling Farms Corporate Park, 6972 Appling Farms Parkway.

19. Baptist Rehab-Germantown Names Hogan New CEO -

Baptist Memorial Health Care Corp. has named Brian K. Hogan as the new administrator and CEO of Baptist Rehabilitation-Germantown, 2100 Exeter Road.

20. Five Guys to Open 2nd Local Burger Joint -

Five Guys Burgers and Fries has inked its second Memphis-area lease – this one in Bartlett – and is close to solidifying two other locations, including one in Midtown.

Jubilee Restaurant Group LLC, owner of the Memphis franchise, has signed a 3,100-square-foot lease in Stage Centre. Five Guys is taking the subdivided end-cap of the 6,660-square-foot space formerly occupied by Blockbuster Video.

Self-serve frozen yogurt shops have popped up en masse across the Mid-South in recent months, with the latest batch coming online soon.

The newest addition to the market, Gracie Bleu, opened its doors last week.
