8. County Commission Weighs New Majority, Past Experience in Preparing for Budget Season -

Shelby County commissioners have plenty to occupy their time as they await the arrival of budget season in May. There is the planning and terms of the county getting into the sewer business, opioid programs and a lawsuit. There is also the exploration with the Memphis City Council and Greater Memphis Chamber of repositioning the city’s economic development pursuits.

9. County Commission Moves Toward Minority Business Fixes, Landfill Moratorium -

Shelby County commissioners vote Monday, Jan. 22, on a first step toward amending the minority and locally owned business program they approved more than a year ago with great fanfare.

The first step is hiring attorney Ricky E. Wilkins to review proposed fixes that are to follow. Wilkins would be paid up to $50,000 from the commission’s contingency fund.

Shelby County commissioners meet Monday, Jan. 8, for the first time in 2018 and have a fairly simple agenda along with some longer-range issues to discuss.

Among the more immediate items on Monday’s agenda is a $1.5 million contract for mobile data terminals, tablets and vehicle wireless routers that Tate Computer Systems Inc. of Memphis would provide to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

27. Commission Moves Closer to Budget Season -

Shelby County commissioners aren’t at budget season just yet, but there are already indications that it is going to be about capital spending.

Commissioners already have a detailed look at what Shelby County Schools will be looking for in the way of funding. And the commission will vote Monday, April 17, on a change in plans for a proposed $120 million refinancing of the county’s capital bond debt.

Shelby County commissioners have to decide Monday, March 20, whether or not to appoint someone to the vacant state House District 95 seat until special primary and general elections are decided in three months.

The Shelby County Commission takes up medical marijuana Monday, Feb. 20, in what will be the second pot debate it has had in two months.

The item on Monday’s agenda is a resolution that would back a bill in the Tennessee Legislature making marijuana for medical purposes legal in Tennessee. The commission will decide whether to back the bill by Republican state Rep. Jeremy Faison of Cosby, oppose it or take no stand on it.

Shelby County is investing in energy efficiency upgrades, waste reduction and green workforce training through the Green Prisons Initiative at the Shelby County Corrections. With a state grant to conduct energy efficiency upgrades, sustainability and reentry programs intersect. Not only will the facility receive upgrades, but the installation will be used as reentry training for the inmates as they will be trained to install the systems. With my background in law enforcement, at Shelby County Corrections, Federal Prisons, and as Shelby County Sheriff, I have a keen interest in reducing recidivism and reentry programs are known to be effective.
