The Whitehaven Summer Youth Experience Program will featured a theatrical presentation of the history of Whitehaven at the program’s Thursday, June 21, finale.

The program by the Blues City Cultural Center is one of several summer initiatives for youths between school years.

The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development brings its apprenticeship listening tour to Memphis Monday, March 19, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Southwest Tennessee Community College’s Bert Bornblum Library art gallery, 5983 Macon Cove. Paychecks for Patriots, a hiring event for Tennessee veterans and their family members, will be held Tuesday, Oct. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the American Job Center, 3040 Walnut Grove Road. More than three dozen employers will be on hand, with many conducting on-site interviews. Attendees should bring resumes and dress for an interview. Job seekers may register in advance at tn.gov/paychecks4patriots or at the door.

National Civil Rights Museum Freedom Award ceremony will be held Thursday, Oct. 20, at 6 p.m. at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts, 255 N. Main St. Themed “And Justice for All,” the award ceremony will honor six individuals for their contributions to civil and human rights in the U.S. and worldwide, and will be followed by a gala celebration. Southwest Tennessee Community College is opening its new Whitehaven Center on Tuesday, Jan. 19. The building, which accommodates nearly 2,000 students at 1234 Finley Road off Elvis Presley Boulevard, is seeing new life following its run as a Kroger store that closed in 2011.

10. Construction Underway On $4.4M Southwest Expansion -

Southwest Tennessee Community College has started construction on its new Whitehaven facility.

Southwest is spending $4.4 million to convert a former Kroger store at 1234 Finley Road into a new site for its Whitehaven Center. It plans to finish construction this fall, but it won’t be ready for students until the spring 2016 semester begins in January. The 44,000-square-foot building will accommodate up to 1,500 students.
