The Hamilton Eye Institute at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center is hosting the second annual Ivan Marais Cataract-A-Thon Friday and Saturday, June 15-16.

More than 50 patients from Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas and surrounding areas who are uninsured or otherwise unable to access proper ophthalmic care will receive cataract surgery at no cost during the two-day community service outreach. Patients were identified through the HEI clinics, the Mid-South Lions Sight and Hearing Service, and Church Health. The value of the services is more than $150,000.

Company d Dancers will perform “LOCAL, Dancing through time … places in Memphis” on Thursday and Friday, March 3-4, at 7 p.m. at Hutchison School, 1740 Ridgeway Road. The Department of Dental Hygiene at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Allied Health Sciences will be realigned under the UTHSC College of Dentistry.

By July 1, the seven full-time faculty, 16 adjunct faculty and four staff members of the department will relocate across campus from their 930 Madison Ave. offices to the Dunn Dental Building at 875 Union Ave. The leadership of the dental hygiene program will remain in place, reporting to Dr. John D. Seeberg, assistant dean for Clinical Affairs in the College of Dentistry.

29. UTMG Renovation To Begin at Midtown Tower -

Investec Realty Services Inc., manager of the 1407 Union Ave. building in Midtown, has filed a $501,000 permit application with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement to renovate 80,000 square feet on seven floors of the building for the University of Tennessee Medical Group Inc.

UT Medical Group Inc. has signed a lease for up to 80,000 square feet of office space at 1407 Union Ave. where it will consolidate its administrative support functions.

31. Blindness Research Could Apply to Other Areas -

When the retina does not get enough of a protein known as Epo, it can lead to degenerative blindness, but scientist Tonia Rex has a strategy to stop that disease in its tracks.

And since the eye is part of the brain, her biotechnology also might be useful in treating Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, and even strokes. She foresees the day, perhaps 10 years from now, when these and a number of other neurological ailments can be treated with a single shot in the hip.

38. Baptist Footprint Grows Ever Larger Downtown -

When the 19-story Baptist Medical Center was imploded two years ago, it marked the departure of Baptist Memorial Hospital from Downtown, at least in the minds of many.

But Baptist Memorial Health Care Corp. continues to have a major presence in the neighborhood, with long-term plans that might even include an expansion of clinical care.
