The Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest continues through Saturday, May 19, in Tom Lee Park Downtown. Among the highlights are the Kingsford Tour of Champions, which gives the public a chance to taste and judge barbecue from competing teams; the Cooker Caravan, a free guided tour of some of the best competition teams; live music; and more. The National Civil Rights Museum will exhibit “From the Vault: Art in Action,” a collection of fine art in expression of civil rights protests, through Monday, Jan. 29, at 450 Mulberry St. The exhibition features pieces from the museum vault, many never displayed before, that represent resistance and actions through demonstrations and collective marching. Novel will host Wintrell Pittman, author of the “Children of the World” book series, for a discussion and book signing Saturday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m. at 387 Perkins Road Extended. The Tennessee Valley Authority is asking the public for input about its plan to build a new Millington transmission line.

TVA is proposing to build the 4.5- to 5.0-mile line from its existing Shelby Substation to Silicon Ranch Millington LLC’s new solar facility. The line would be built on steel poles on a 100-foot-wide right of way. Several routes are under consideration.

17. Early Voting Opens in Three Suburbs for Boards -

Early voting in three of Shelby County’s six suburban towns and cities opens Monday, Oct. 28, at locations in Germantown, Bartlett and Millington for newly created suburban school boards.

The early voting period for those cities and Lakeland in advance of the Nov. 7 election day began Oct. 18 at Shelby County Election Commission officers Downtown at 157 Poplar Avenue.

18. Suburbs Ready for Start of Early Voting -

Early voting will be a bit earlier than usual for the municipal school district referendums in Shelby County’s six suburban towns and cities.

Election Day is July 16 in each of the suburban communities holding the set of special elections with the ballot question as the only item on the ballot.
