Plans for three prominent Downtown redevelopment projects received the architectural green light Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 11, from the Downtown Memphis Commission’s Design Review Board.

Developer 495 TN Partners, which includes partners William Orgel, Jay Lindy and Adam Slovis, will be able to begin construction on Phase II of the Tennessee Brewery development at the southeast corner of Tennessee Street and Butler Avenue in the South Main Historic Arts District.

Nationally and in Memphis, the hotel room supply, room demand, occupancy rate and average daily room rate were all on the rise year-to-date through July, pointing to a healthy market overall.

That’s according to information compiled by STR presented at the Southern Lodging Summit Wednesday morning, Aug. 30, at the Cook Convention Center in Memphis. The Southern Lodging Summit is an annual event hosted by Pinkowski & Co. and the Metropolitan Memphis Hotel and Lodging Association.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director John Morton and Assistant U.S. Attorney Lanny A. Breuer announced the results of the ICE and FBI three-month investigation on "Cyber Monday," the day that for many shoppers kicks off the online holiday shopping season.

Recession casualties in the business sector could be easing, according to the most recent numbers for privilege licenses in the greater Memphis area.

The number of business permits issued during the third quarter slipped by 2.8 percent from the same period a year ago, according to The Daily News Online, www.memphisdailynews.com. That compares to an 8.8 percent drop in the second quarter.

58. Art Student Galvanizes Others To Shore Up 'Broken Windows' -

More and more police departments around the country, including the one in Memphis, have begun subscribing to the "broken windows" theory of law enforcement.

A single broken window, the theory goes, might encourage vandals to break more windows until the building and surrounding area are overrun by a variety of criminal acts. In law enforcement or any other instance, small problems thus are confronted before they have a chance to metastasize.

Collierville used to be a sleepy country town, but it soon will turn into a good place for travelers to get some sleep.

Southern Hospitality LLC plans to begin construction on a 131-room Courtyard by Marriott hotel in early 2007 that will become the third anchor of The Avenue Carriage Crossing outdoor mall in Collierville, the Memphis suburb with an estimated 44,000 residents.

60. More Local Homebuyers are Finding Property Online -

A large nationwide survey shows more homebuyers than ever are getting on the information superhighway when looking for a place to settle down.

The number of buyers who use the Internet to search for homes has risen steadily over the years, according to the National Association of Realtors' Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers. Only 2 percent of those surveyed used the Internet to look at homes in 1995. That number shot up to 77 percent in 2005, up from 74 percent the previous year.
