Memphis City Council members will consider an amendment Tuesday, Feb. 7, to plans for a 150-room hotel on the northwest corner of Madison Avenue and B.B. King Boulevard.

The Memphis College of Art appears set to move its graduate programs away from Downtown and back to its Overton Park campus.

The college’s graduate art education and master’s programs are currently housed in the Nesin Graduate School at 477 S. Main St. College president Ron Jones said that as a result of a “large-scale institutional review” over the past year that included the graduate programs, the college became convinced the graduate student experience would “vastly improve” by shifting things back to the main campus.

Memphis College of Art has undergone big changes in recent weeks, and the newest one has changed the face of the South Main Historic Arts District as well.

The college’s graduate school, formerly housed in and near MCA’s main campus at 1930 Poplar Ave., is now open in a converted warehouse space at 477 S. Main St. The college purchased the 49,025-square-foot space in late January for $400,000 and immediately set to work with Askew Nixon Ferguson Architects on the architectural design of the space, said Ken Strickland, MCA interim president.

A new investment management and consulting firm is preparing to set up shop Downtown after considering spaces in Midtown and in East Memphis’ Ridgeway Center.

Trestle Capital Partners, which will specialize in marketing hedge fund investments to high net-worth investors, has signed a letter of intent to enter into a five-year lease for 890 square feet of commercial space in The Washburn, a mixed-use building at 60 S. Main St.

The Memphis College of Art has bought the 49,025-square-foot warehouse at 477 S. Main St. in the South Main Arts District, where it will house its graduate school.

97. AIA-Memphis Returns To Downtown -

The Memphis chapter of the American Institute of Architects is joining a growing list of institutions with plans to relocate or expand Downtown.

AIA-Memphis at the end of March is leaving the temporary Midtown space it shares with Memphis Heritage Inc. to move into a storefront in Downtown’s South Main Historic Arts District. The new digs will put the chapter in a bustling retail and commercial corridor where it hopes to grab a piece of the area’s foot traffic.

At today’s Center City Development Corp. meeting, board members are scheduled to take action on a request by Memphis College of Art for financial incentives associated with the college’s relocation of its graduate program to 477 S. Main St.
