Memphis City Council members have approved $250,000 in funding for a Memphis Music Hall of Fame at Hard Rock Cafe’s new location at Beale and Second streets.

The funding from the federal money turned over to the city when federal officials abandoned plans for Interstate 40 through Overton Park is the first of two funding requests organizers of the Hall of Fame plan to make of the city for the $1.2 million project, which will also include private funding.

5. This week in Memphis history: September 20-26 -

1993: Elvis Presley Enterprises joined the ownership group for the proposed Memphis NFL franchise that city leaders were seeking. William B. Dunavant Jr., the leader of the effort, announced Graceland’s role in the ownership group during a reception at Graceland. Others in the ownership group included Fred Smith, Mike Starnes, J.R. “Pitt” Hyde and Paul Tudor Jones.

The Rotary Club of Memphis Central will meet Friday, Aug. 12, from 11:45 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the Holiday Inn University of Memphis, 3700 Central Ave. Dee Floyd, community development manager, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, will speak about its hospice. Family Dollar will commemorate the grand opening of its 7,000th store Thursday, Aug. 11, from 7:45 a.m. to1 p.m. at the 7,000th store, 656 S. Highland St. The event will include prizes, deals, games, products and light catering.

Three federal tax liens totaling more than $1.1 million have been filed against Memphis Security Co. at 4466 Elvis Presley Blvd. in Whitehaven.
