5. Gallery Survives Despite Economic Onslaught -

When Hannah Davis opened her art gallery on Huling Row in the summer of 2008, the Great Recession was preparing to send the economy into cardiac arrest.

A little more than a year later, the economy has a pulse again, and the recession has ebbed. And that means the Hannah Davis Art Gallery at 408 South Front St. has outlasted what economists agree has been one of the worst and most panic-inducing business cycles in generations.

It's not easy to find a silver lining in the dark cloud that hovered over February's residential housing numbers. With home sales in Shelby County dropping 15.6 percent from the same month last year, the real estate slump that began in 2007 appears to be in full force.

8. Old Union Planters Building Gets Major Facelift -

With the Center City Commission (CCC) listing 1,065 condominiums in the Downtown market and with more on the way, a Dallas-based residential development company has decided to go in a different direction.

9. Connecting Buyers and Sellers -

A local Realtor is looking to tap into the rising Downtown condominium market by providing an information center for potential buyers in the 38103 ZIP code.

Kendall Haney, owner of Kendall Haney Realty Group at 612 S. Cooper St., early this month opened the Downtown Condo Connection at 408 S. Front St. as a resource for potential buyers who might be confused by the sheer variety and availability of the area's condos.

10. Mixed-Use Mirabella Could Be Catalyst for Growth -

Ted Sullivan, general manager of Gus's Fried Chicken at 310 S. Front St., couldn't see the future of the neighborhood surrounding his restaurant when Gus's opened almost five years ago.

"When we first went in here, we had no idea the Forum was going in. That has brought us enormous amounts of business," Sullivan said. "You add in all these new houses and then condos across the street and on both sides, and we're going to have so many people down here - and it can do nothing but help us out."
