2007: First Horizon cuts its mortgage sales force in half – 1,500 mortgage positions and 500 supporting positions – reflecting national economic tremors that will grow to include a collapse of the housing market. “I think we have certain regulatory and other just practical issues but as quickly as possible,” First Horizon employee services head John Daniel says of the timing of the cuts. “Our original view was that we would try to not have significant reductions and perhaps benefit from the fact that so many companies were going out of business. … The volumes are going to drop so significantly we just couldn’t take the risk of having all that expense without the business being there.”

2. Memphis, Shelby County Home Sales Still Rising -

Though last month saw the first dip in average home sales prices in nine months, the number of home sales in June continued to increase.

The average sales price dropped slightly to $178,572, a 1 percent decrease from a year ago, according to real estate information company Chandler Reports, chandlerreports.com. However, the total number of home sales reached 1,852 for the month, up 9 percent from 1,692 a year ago. Additionally, the volume of home sales rose to $331 million, up 8 percent from $305 million last year.

3. Two New Historical Markers Unveiled During Elvis Week -

In what has become an Elvis Week tradition in recent years, the Shelby County Historical Commission will unveil two new markers Tuesday, Aug. 11, related to the life of Elvis Presley and the Memphis music industry.

The Memphis Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America will honor Loeb Properties president Bob Loeb, the chapter’s 2014 Communicator of the Year, at its monthly luncheon Thursday, Feb. 12, at 11:45 at the University Club, 1346 Central Ave. Cost is free for members and $25 for nonmembers. The building that houses the corporate headquarters of FedEx Corp. at 942 S. Shady Grove Road in East Memphis has sold for $22.6 million.

The Division of Social Work at the University of Memphis is accepting applications for its master of social work degree program.

An informational meeting will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the University Center’s Poplar Room, room 308.

Poplar Tunes, a record store started in downtown Memphis in 1946, closed Thursday along with its sister stores, Pop Tunes. A sign at the flagship original store said a number of economic factors had “reduced the traditional record store to road kill with a slight pulse.”
