Two new local owners are under contract to buy and convert the former French Quarter Suites Hotel in Midtown’s Overton Square district to a Comfort Suites in a $6 million project.

At a public meeting Wednesday, Feb. 1, at Memphis Heritage Inc.’s office, 2282 Madison Ave., partners Jay Kumar and Rishi Chopra revealed plans to purchase the vacant 103-room hotel at 2144 Madison Ave., at the northeast corner of Cooper Street and Madison from FQI LLC for $2.3 million and pump about $3.7 million into renovations.

84. Young Heritage to Hold First Big Event With 'Smart Growth' in Mind -      Last October, Josh Whitehead paid for a three-hour ride from a commercial helicopter service based at the General DeWitt Spain Airport. He gave the pilot a map of Memphis and instructed him to "stay within the parkways."

In 1906, Edward Boyle, a member of the well-known Memphis family of developers, helped fashion a grand boulevard through the Central Gardens neighborhood.

Scores of influential Memphians have lived in the Midtown community's bungalows, foursquares and Tudor estate homes, including former Memphis City Council member Florence Leffler and federal judge Julia Gibbons.

For Neely Woodson Powell, it was the demolition last year of the Eureka Hotel that did it.

The red-brick building at 356 Mulberry St. had a storied history. More than a century old, the Victorian-style hotel was well-known in its day for catering to prominent black musicians during the segregation era. Jazz legend Duke Ellington was reportedly one of its famous guests.

New real estate developments, both large and small, are cropping up in almost every corner of Memphis and Shelby County.
