1. Fresh Market Updates Memphis-Area Stores -

The Fresh Market has unveiled a new look and shopping experience at its Memphis-area stores, part of changes the brand is rolling out company-wide through 2018.

The Memphis stores were part of the early rollout, which has already seen updates to Fresh Market stores in the company’s home state of North Carolina, as well as in Boca Raton, Florida, and Columbia, South Carolina. In general, the changes include a new look inside and expanded product offerings – at the company’s store at 2145 Union Ave., for example, a baby section greets customers for the first time.

Jimmy Lewis isn’t surprised by word that emerged in recent days about Kroger, the nation’s largest grocery chain, eyeing an acquisition of specialty grocer Fresh Market.

3. Memphis' Grocery Wars -

After Sprouts became one of the newest grocery chains to enter the Memphis market by opening stores in Lakeland and Germantown earlier this year, company spokesman Diego Romero described the chain’s arrival as practically a no-brainer.

4. Mixed-Use Midtown Market on Tap for Long-Vacant Corner -

Rumors and speculation have long run rampant about potential development at the southwest corner of Union Avenue and McLean Boulevard, one of Memphis’ busiest intersections.

Some of the speculation involved keeping the eight-story hotel, which was built in the late 1960s, as the central feature of whatever came next. In other scenarios it would be demolished.

5. Fresh Market Debuts Midtown Store -

For a while now Central Gardens resident Tom Clifton has been driving to East Memphis to get his groceries.

Rizzo’s Diner and the Memphis Crisis Center will hold a “Less to Wine About Wednesday” fundraiser Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the restaurant, 106 G.E. Patterson Ave. Rizzo’s will donate 25 percent of the day’s profits to the crisis center. Visit rizzosdiner.com.

The Fresh Market has set an opening date for its new Midtown store.

The new store at 2145 Union Ave. will open Aug. 13 at 8 a.m., and grand opening activities will include chef demonstrations, food sampling throughout the store and drawings for The Fresh Market gift cards. A sample-sized bag of the company’s gourmet coffee and a reusable shopping bag will be free to the first 1,000 customers.

By this time next year, Midtown residents could be shopping at a new Fresh Market grocery store.

The upscale grocery chain is eyeing the Union Avenue Ike's, which a Walgreen Co. representative confirmed will be shuttered.

Florida-based entity WG Memphis LLC has bought the Ike’s drug store property at 2145 Union Ave., as well as three adjacent parcels of vacant land, for $9.5 million from Little Rock, Ark.-based LAF Brothers Properties LLC.

14. Another Kind of Drug War -

Walgreens’ buyout of 17 local drug stores is the first salvo in a brewing battle for the Memphis market between the nation’s largest retail pharmacy and its closet competitor, CVS.

With the purchase of the prescription files of area Super D and Ike’s drug stores, Walgreens will increase its market share just as CVS is making inroads into Memphis. Walgreens will also lock up two prime locations by obtaining the two Ike’s stores at 2145 Union Ave. and 5040 Park Ave.
