The end of Memphis City Council sessions has long been the place for issues and complaints not on the council agenda. The time reserved for citizens to speak their mind is where some of the broadest criticism is leveled at city leaders. There is also no level of detail that is considered too great for some of the speakers.

2. U.S. Stocks Inch Higher; Amazon Deal Shakes Health Care Firms -

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are slightly higher Thursday as gains for technology companies and banks help the market recover some of its recent losses. Amazon said it's buying an online pharmacy and launching its own delivery van business, and drugstores and medication distributors as well as delivery companies are sinking. U.S. crude oil is at its highest price since late 2014. A day ago, stocks closed at their lowest level in about a month.

3. What a Kick -

Peter Freund is a baseball guy. Grew up on the New York Yankees. Today, not only is he principal owner of the Memphis Redbirds, he owns stakes in other minor league teams through his Trinity Baseball Holdings and even has a small slice of the Yankees. But make no mistake, he is a businessman. And it was the businessman in him that was convinced to bring a United Soccer League (USL) team to Memphis and AutoZone Park for the 2019 season.

President Donald Trump’s proposal to cut billions from Medicaid’s budget would have “serious implications” on rural Tennessee hospitals.

That was the assessment of researchers from the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s Department of Family Medicine, Healthcare Management Partners and local stakeholders who gathered in Jackson, Tenn., Wednesday for a public forum on the impact of federal health policy on the health of rural Tennessee.

A Chicago-based hotel group has closed on its purchase of the Madison Hotel and several surrounding properties.

Aparium Hotel Group, working as 79 Madison Avenue LLC, acquired the Madison and three other parcels from the hotel’s operator, Wilmont Hotel LP, in a June 21 quitclaim deed just filed with the Shelby County Register’s Office. Those other parcels include 83 Madison Ave., which houses eighty3 restaurant and office space; and a banquet center that spans 9 S. Main St. and 11 S. Main St.

Collierville’s 324-unit Madison at Schilling Farms apartment community has changed hands in the largest multifamily sale in Shelby County over the past year.

New Jersey-based private equity firm Spyglass Capital Partners LLC, working as Spyglass-Collierville LLC, paid $34.3 million, or $105,864 per unit, for the Class A property. The seller, Arenda Capital Management affiliate Madison 324 LLC, had purchased the community four years ago for $32 million.

A group of private investors – led by Memphis businessman Michael Cook – is looking to turn a blighted Downtown block into a mixed-use development with covered parking.

Walk-Off Properties LLC bought the nine-story Hickman Building and its accompanying two-story parking garage on Sept. 30 for $1 million. The building, at 240 Madison Ave., sits across from the Fogelman Downtown YMCA.

44. Someone Else’s Shoes -

The group of men marching in late June from the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts to FedExForum moved slowly and with some missteps and awkwardness.

The women’s shoes they wore, many with heels, made the walk difficult between two events on June 25 that signaled a new phase in the official reaction to and fall out from the city’s now nearly two-year old scandal of more than 12,000 untested rape kits.

Randy Morris' Colorado-based independent wealth management firm Summit Wealth Group has grown at a steady clip over the last several years, and its new entry into the Memphis market shows that trend isn't slowing.

Two weeks after the death of Ardent Studios founder John Fry, the Midtown recording studio and music business has answered questions about the future of the enterprise.

A post Friday, Jan. 2, on the Ardent Facebook page says leaders of the privately owned company will continue to operate it and are not interested in selling it.

59. Rape Kit Backlog Prompts Court Fight on Two Fronts -

The court fight over the city’s backlog of untested rape kits has two legal fronts with the filing this week of a Circuit Court lawsuit by Meaghan Ybos, Madison Graves and Rachel Johnson, the three rape survivors who filed suit earlier this year in U.S. District Court against Memphis and Shelby County over the backlog.

65. Second Lawsuit Filed Over Rape Kit Backlog -

Three women allegedly raped by Anthony Alliano during a string of rapes in the Cordova area covering a decade have filed suit in Memphis Federal Court over the delay in testing their rape kits.

It is the second federal lawsuit filed against the city of Memphis since December over the backlog of more than 12,000 untested rape kits police acknowledged in November after initially putting the backlog of rape kits at 2,000 in August.
