OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Former Mississippi head football coach Billy Kinard has died at the age of 84.

The 60th FedEx St. Jude Classic teed off on Monday, June 5, with the Danny Thomas Pro-Am at TPC Southwind.

It is the continuation of a tradition. Back in 1960, the Memphis Open Golf Tournament presented Thomas with a check for $600. It was seed money that went toward the opening of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Details: A student housing tower near the University of Memphis has taken a step forward nearly two years after a development on that site was first announced.

5. Carnival Aims to Launch Miami to Cuba Cruises in May -

The world's largest cruise company could be heading to Cuba.

Starting in May, Carnival Corp. plans to offer trips from Miami to the Caribbean island nation, the company announced Tuesday. Carnival says it would become the first American cruise company to visit Cuba since the 1960 trade embargo. The trips will be through its new brand, fathom, which focuses on trips where passengers sail to a destination in order to volunteer there.

6. Memphis Sports Legend Bramlett Passes Away -

John “Bull” Bramlett, who starred for the University of Memphis in football and baseball, and played in the NFL, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 23. He was 73.

John Bramlett was a great football and baseball player for the University of Memphis, and we are deeply saddened by his passing,” Tom Bowen, director of athletics at the University of Memphis, said in a statement. “John made a lasting impression in all that he did both on the football field and in his work and ministry. God bless his family.”

11. Census: US Men Narrowing the Gender Gap of Old Age -

WASHINGTON (AP) – Women still outlive men, but the gender gap among U.S. seniors is narrowing.

New 2010 census figures, released Thursday, show men are reducing women's population advantage, primarily in the 65-plus age group. It's a change in the social dynamics of a country in which longevity, widowhood and health care for seniors often have been seen as issues more important to women.

13. ConGlobal Files Loan On Westwood Facilities -

ConGlobal Industries Inc. has filed a $5.8 million deed of trust, assignment of leases and rents, security agreement, financing statement and fixture filing through Regions Bank on its facilities at 1658 and 1684 Florida St. in Westwood. The loan was dated Sept. 4. Local executives were not available for comment on the transaction.
