It didn’t take the Shelby County Commission very long Wednesday to close the door on its budget season – about 20 minutes in the day’s special meeting to approve a county property tax rate of $4.11 on third and final reading. That’s not a quick up or down vote. And it took just a bit longer because there is still some discussion about whether this was a reduction in the tax rate or a tax cut in the sense that a homeowner in Shelby County would understand the term.

Had the flattering comments come from the Memphis Grizzlies’ own content producers, Grind City Media, they would have been easy enough to dismiss. After all, that would have been like what center Marc Gasol said at season’s end when stressing the importance of candid evaluation.

Butch Jones did it again. The Tennessee football coach gave opponents press conference fodder with another one-liner while putting his spin on the Vols’ 2017 signing class.

It happened a day after the Feb. 1 National Signing Day when UT’s class was rated No. 17 nationally in the 247Sports composite rankings.

9. Back-to-Back Dak? Dobbs Shines at Senior Bowl -

To say Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs might be the next Dak Prescott is a stretch. Or is it? Prescott, the former Mississippi State quarterback, caught the eye of the Dallas Cowboys with his MVP performance in the 2016 Senior Bowl. The Cowboys chose Prescott in the fourth round (No. 135 overall pick) of the 2016 NFL Draft, and it proved a fruitful pick.

In the first quarter, the Grizzlies allowed 14 points. In the second quarter, they allowed 38. And down the stretch, when their defense had to make stops, the Grizzlies weren’t up to the task.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The San Antonio Spurs played poorly, were not sharp and heard all about it during a fiery timeout.

Imagine if they had lost.

Kawhi Leonard scored 19 points, Tony Parker had 18 and the Spurs held on to snap the Memphis Grizzlies' four-game winning streak with a 92-82 victory Saturday night.

I miss Steve Spurrier.

It won’t be the same without Spurrier coaching South Carolina when Tennessee (4-4, 2-3 SEC) plays host to the Gamecocks (3-5, 1-5) on Saturday.

29. Nike Adds 400K Square Feet To Local Portfolio -

The world’s largest maker of athletic gear has signed a lease in Memphis’ Southeast industrial submarket to handle its newly acquired NFL contract.

Nike Inc. inked a 400,000-square-foot warehouse lease in Centerpointe Distribution Center No. 1, 3461 E. Raines Road. Built in 1994, the property, owned by San Francisco-based Prologis Inc., features 38 dock doors and an 11,687-square-foot office space component.

30. Entercom’s Move Done by Feb., GM Says -

In 2006, Entercom Memphis LLC acquired three radio stations, doubling its broadcast footprint. Earlier this year, it signed a lease to move into 18,000 square feet at Moriah Woods business park, doubling its office space.

The principals who formed the architecture and design firm Hnedak Bobo Group Inc. nearly 30 years ago have merged with Bullock Smith & Partners, giving the longtime Memphis company 30 new employees, two additional offices and a unified front in this difficult economy.

Case filings saw a slowdown in area courts during third quarter 2005, with decreases across the board compared with the same period last year.
