The alliance has also explored the idea of Pathways in Technology Early College High Schools, also known as P-Tech schools that extend high school for two years beyond the senior year and offer college-level courses starting in the 10th grade for college credit.

The Memphis City Council has signed off on changes to the system of tax breaks used to recruit new businesses and encourage business expansion in Shelby County.

The unanimous 13-0 council vote this week bookends a unanimous vote by the Shelby County Board of Commissioners earlier this month.

About half of Shelby County's delegation to the Tennessee Legislature won re-election at Thursday's filing deadline for candidates on the Aug. 7 ballot.

Eight of the 16 state House seats had only one candidate - the incumbent. And all three of the state Senate seats on the ballot were incumbent-only affairs.

Memphis Heart Clinic recently appointed Dr. Arsalan Shirwany to its cardiovascular practice. Shirwany is board certified in cardiology, echocardiology and internal medicine. He has served as chief fellow during his cardiology fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC).
