National Civil Rights Museum Freedom Award ceremony will be held Thursday, Oct. 20, at 6 p.m. at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts, 255 N. 3. Wills Stewarding Growth of East Memphis Land -

For Walter Wills III, taking care of his neighborhood and the surrounding area is one of his life tasks.

Wills & Wills LP has owned much of the land in the Kirby-Quince corridor for more than 40 years. The area is seeing an influx of medical office and retail users in the past few years, and more are expected with a new Regional Medical Center at Memphis outpatient center in the area.

5. MED Buys East Memphis Land for $3.4 Million -

The Regional Medical Center at Memphis has closed on its $3.4 million purchase of two parcels totaling 54.5 acres of land at Quince Road and Tenn. 385 in East Memphis.

Operating in the transaction as Regional Med Properties LLC, the MED on Nov. 16 paid $3.4 million for 29.5 acres between Quince and 385 from KG Land LLC.

6. J.D. Byrider Brings First Franchise To Memphis -

The nation’s largest used car franchise company has entered the Memphis market. Carmel, Ind.-based J.D. Byrider has inked 30,900 square feet at 2580 Mount Moriah Road, marking the company’s second Tennessee dealership.

7. Crye-Leike Sells Properties, Land At Feb. Auction -

Multiple properties in the Memphis area have traded hands as a result of an auction held by Crye-Leike Auction Services in February.

Kays Nawaf Employee Pension Plan sold three flex warehouse buildings at 4652 Damascus Road, 4660 Damascus Road and 4668 Damascus Road, ranging from 7,450 square feet to 10,160 square feet. There was a published minimum bid of $83,000 each.

8. The Burger Joint Joins Ridgeway Trace -

Another national burger chain is setting up shop locally, except this one selected Memphis as its entrance into the Tennessee market.

BGR The Burger Joint is the latest tenant to join Ridgeway Trace Center, the 347,358-square-foot development at Poplar Avenue and Interstate 240 anchored by Target, Best Buy, PetSmart and Sports Authority.

9. Civil Court Filings Drop in Second Quarter -

Court filings in Circuit, Chancery and Probate courts were down for the second quarter compared to the same quarter a year ago and the first quarter of 2011, according to The Daily News Online, www.memphisdailynews.com.

10. Methodist Hospice Set for Opening -

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare is set to open its new hospice residence, which will provide comfort and care in a serene, homelike like setting for terminally ill adult and pediatric patients in the final stage of life.

11. New Mayor Lowery Braces for First Council Battle -

Memphis Mayor Pro Tempore Myron Lowery goes to the City Council today with a new nominee for city attorney, former U.S. Attorney Veronica Coleman Davis, and lots of questions from some of his former council colleagues about his dismissal Friday of the old city attorney.

For the most part, it was business as usual for area courts during the past year. There were a few exceptions - some high-profile cases here and there and an upcoming change in state law that will impact local court clerks.
