College football writer Barrett Sallee provided a two-part explanation for how this came to be:

4. Gainwell Learning Multiple Roles on Offense As He Embarks On Tiger Career -

Memphis Tiger freshman Kenny Gainwell lined up as a running back in the middle of Sunday’s Liberty Bowl practice and took a handoff through the offensive line for a short gain.

There are no breaks on coach Mike Norvell’s field. So when Gainwell, listed as a running back, untangles himself from the arms of a defensive lineman, it’s time to reset and run another play.

The Beale Street Music Festival opens Friday and the clouds appear right on cue. But that, in and of itself, doesn’t stop the proceedings in Tom Lee Park. Lightning is another matter, of course. Poncho and boots are a part of the Memphis In May identity. And one day there will be a digital map of the park’s terrain that shows the areas that are the mud pits and those that are largely mud proof. That’s for some of you to avoid them and others among you to find them and “celebrate” them.

Iowa State plays in college football mecca as a Power 5 member, albeit in the Big 12. The University of Memphis lives in the non-Power 5 outer ring that is the American Athletic Conference. For a game that happened two months ago, UCF’s 40-13 victory over the Memphis Tigers has had incredible staying power. But there are logical reasons for that, too.

It’s the only loss Memphis (10-1) suffered all year. The Tigers took out two Top-25 teams (at the time the games were played) in UCLA and Navy. 38. Tigers Deliver Victory in Wind and Rain -

Tigers kick returner Tony Pollard let the ball settle into his hands. Do not take that part for granted. This was at the start of the second half Thursday night at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.
