1. Non-Bank Lenders See Business Rise Among Shelby County Homebuyers -

One byproduct of the steady upward climb in volume generated by Shelby County’s mortgage market over the past year or two is that banks – traditional brick-and-mortar institutions, that is – haven’t been the only beneficiary of the consumer demand behind that trend.

2. Housing Remains Strong -

The way BankTennessee mortgage specialist Jessica Campbell sees it, conditions in Shelby County’s current residential real estate market are about as favorable as the industry could hope for.

3. Shelby County Mortgage Market Slips Slightly in April -

Shelby County’s mortgage market kicked off the second quarter in April by slipping a little on a total volume basis, although the market is still looking better year-to-date than it did at this time last year.

4. Criswell Take Reins As MAAR Board President -

Tommie Criswell has begun her yearlong tenure as president of the Memphis Area Association of Realtors’ board of directors. Criswell has actively volunteered with MAAR for more than 20 years. At Crye-Leike East Memphis, where she serves as broker/manager, she focuses on residential real estate along with some commercial real estate sales. 

5. Ernest Strickland Takes On Workforce Role at Chamber -

The Greater Memphis Chamber has promoted Ernest Strickland to senior vice president of workforce development, a newly created role. Strickland, who has worked at the chamber since 2006, previously served as vice president of international and business partnerships.
In his new position, he is responsible for creating and implementing the chamber’s workforce development strategy. His department serves as a liaison, working directly with existing and prospective businesses to ensure they are able to attract and retain a qualified workforce today and in the future.

6. Shelby County Home Sales Continue Momentum in October -

Memphis Realtors gathered at Minglewood Hall recently for a Residential Housing Summit, at which they heard from local community and economic development leaders as well as chief economist at Realtor.com Jonathan Smoke.

7. Home Sales and Prices Continue to Rise in Shelby County -

Home prices and sales continued to rise in September across Shelby County’s municipalities. Out of the county’s 33 ZIP codes, 20 had an increase in overall sales activity for the month and 19 ZIP codes saw increases in average sales prices.

8. August Home Sales End Two-Month Slump as Inventory Remains Tight -

After a two-month slump, home sales in Shelby County increased 15 percent in August.

There were 1,712 sales recorded in August compared to 1,494 recorded in August 2015, according to data from real estate information company Chandler Reports, chandlerreports.com.

9. Mortgage Market Sees 8 Percent Gain in June -

Shelby County’s mortgage market is sticking to its familiar pattern and heating up along with the temperatures outside as total purchase mortgage volume hit $214 million in June.

That’s an 8 percent improvement over June 2015’s total of a little more than $198 million, according to real estate information company Chandler Reports, www.chandlerreports.com.

10. June Home Sales Slip, Prices Still Rising -

Shelby County home sales are moving slower through the mid-point of 2016 with prices higher than last year.

The number of home sales recorded for June came in at 1,688, down 5 percent compared to 1,784 sales recorded in June 2015, according to data from real estate information company Chandler Reports, chandlerreports.com.

11. New-Home Sales Lag in February, Inventory Remains Low -

February home sales in Shelby County rose 18 percent over February 2015 while the average sales price fell 6 percent to $135,216.

With 1,111 total sales for the month, home sales revenue increased 10 percent year-over-year, according to data from real estate company Chandler Reports, chandlerreports.com.

12. Mortgage Market Sees Small January Dip -

Shelby County’s mortgage market kicked off 2016 reflecting a bit of the backwards step other sectors of the economy, such as the stock market, have taken in recent weeks.

Looking at purchase activity, new mortgage numbers available for January show mortgage volume last month slipped 3 percent to $86.7 million, compared with $89.4 million in January 2015. That’s according to real estate information company Chandler Reports, chandlerreports.com.

13. Shelby County Housing Market 'Back to Normal' in 2015 -

The Memphis and Shelby County housing market moved closer to prerecession levels in 2015 as the year closed with the highest home sales revenue recorded since 2007.

There were 16,176 sales recorded last year, up 3 percent from 2014, according to real estate information company Chandler Reports, chandlerreports.com.

14. Quarterly Economic Data Shows Improvement -

Based on several metrics related to the local economy in the first quarter, there would appear to be plenty of data to back up the optimism real estate professionals like Tommie Criswell, broker-manager for Crye-Leike’s East Memphis office, say they feel at the moment.

15. Shelby County Mortgage Market Sees Improvement -

The mortgage market in Shelby County ended 2014 in a slighter better position than where it stood in 2013.

Banks and mortgage lenders made 8,471 purchase mortgages in Shelby County during 2014, up 2 percent from the 8,301 mortgages during 2013, according to the latest data from real estate information company Chandler Reports,www.chandlerreports.com.

16. MAAR Elects New Board Members -

The Memphis Area Association of Realtors recently elected several new members to the organization’s board of directors.

Felix Bishop of Crye-Leike Realtors Inc., Deborah Williams of 4 Success Realty LLC, Lauren Harkins-Wiuff of Crye-Leike, David Tester of Marx-Bensdorf Realtors, John Mercer of Highwoods Properties and Albert Lee of Century 21 Maselle & Associates were selected to be 2015-2016 board members.

17. MAAR Elects New Board Members -

18. Foreclosures Drop 22 Percent in Second Quarter -

United Housing Inc. has teamed up with Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church to create the first Grace-St. Luke’s GraceBuilders House, which will involve fixing up a foreclosed home for a family in United Housing’s Homebuyer Education program.

19. Housing Market Stumbles in First Quarter -

Shelby County home sales slowed in the first quarter when compared to the same three-month period in 2013.

Shelby County recorded 3,270 home sales in the quarter that ended March 31, down 3 percent from the 3,383 homes sold in the first quarter of 2013, according to real estate information company Chandler Reports, www.chandlerreports.com.

20. Blume Named to Tennessee Real Estate Commission -

Gary Blume, a veteran agent with RE/MAX Real Estate Experts, has been appointed by Gov. Bill Haslam to a five-year term on the Tennessee Real Estate Commission. Blume is a past president of the Memphis Area Association of Realtors and has served twice as president of the Tennessee Real Estate Educational Foundation.

21. Kiser Joins Volunteer Mid-South As Community Services Director -

Amanda Kiser has joined Volunteer Mid-South as community services director. Kiser’s responsibilities include mobilizing and maximizing volunteer resources, coordinating training for partner agencies, creating and leading community projects, and marketing VMS’ benefits to agencies and the public.

22. Fayette, Tipton Housing Markets Still Slipping -

January home sales declined in Fayette and Tipton counties – 3.2 and 40 percent, respectively, from the same month a year ago – and Shelby County’s neighbors to the east and north remain buyers’ markets as home prices remain stagnant.

23. Head Selected as Director Of SWTCC Library -

Carolyn Head has been selected to serve as executive director of Library Services for Southwest Tennessee Community College.

24. Harmon Receives Pro Bono Award -

Whitney Harmon, an attorney at Glankler Brown PLLC, has received the first Frank J. Glankler Jr. Pro Bono Award.

Glankler Brown committed this year to taking a minimum of 35 pro bono cases each year from Memphis Area Legal Services, an organization that provides legal assistance for people unable to afford representation. Harmon practices in the area of civil litigation and is a member of the American, Tennessee, Kentucky and Memphis Bar Associations, as well as the Association for Women Attorneys.

25. Fencing Match -

In what has become a continuing uphill battle against national headlines routinely depicting doom and gloom in the housing market, Memphis real estate professionals have launched a counterattack.

"Hop Off the Fence" is a calculated campaign of the Memphis Area Association of Realtors (MAAR) that began Monday and will run through October.

26. Med Nurse Earns State Leadership Award -

The Tennessee Nurses Association recognized Dr. Diane Todd Pace with the Alma E. Gault Leadership Award. Pace is a nurse practitioner/nurse scientist with the Regional Medical Center at Memphis/Health Loop Clinics. She earned a doctorate from the University of Tennessee.

27. Area Home Sales See Midsummer Decline -
