6. Impact of Three-Day RiverArtsFest Felt Year-Round -

RiverArtsFest is gearing up for its 10th annual fine arts festival this weekend Downtown in the South Main Arts District, where more than 20,000 people are expected to attend the three-day event.

Launched in 1989 as Arts in the Park in Overton Park before relocating to the Memphis Botanic Garden in 1992, the fest was revitalized in 2007 as RiverArtsFest and moved to its present location.

T.O. Fuller State Park will hold a New Year’s Day hike on the 4.5-mile Discovery Trail Thursday, Jan. 1, starting at 9:30 a.m. at the visitors center, 1500 W. Mitchell Road. Members of the Tennessee Trails Association will be serving samples of black-eyed peas, cornbread, chips and dip and hot chocolate, and a ranger will be present to host a birds of prey program. Hard Rock Cafe Memphis will host the seventh annual Hard Rock Guitar Drop Wednesday, Dec. 31, from 6:30 p.m. to Thursday, Jan. 1, at 2 a.m. at Hard Rock, 126 Beale St. The event will feature live music inside and outside the cafe, including a headline performance by The Bar-Kays. Memphis Zoo hosts the final night of SunTrust Zoo Lights Tuesday, Dec. 30, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the zoo, 2000 Prentiss Place. 17. Methodist South Hospital Completes Renovations -

Methodist South Hospital will host a ribbon-cutting and consecration ceremony to celebrate the completion of its lobby and first floor renovations Friday, May 9, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.

The 10-month renovation project includes an expansion of the lobby area and a newly renovated ICU waiting room, ICU break/sleep room, gift shop, chapel and physician break room. Other renovations include expanded credit union and outpatient registration areas and new tile throughout the first floor. The 9,500-square-foot renovation project cost approximately $2 million.

Memphis City Council member Lee Harris is challenging Democratic state Sen. Ophelia Ford in the August primary for District 29, the Senate seat held by a member of the Ford family since 1975.

Arshula Lynn recently put up the open sign at her new business, Main Event Boutique, and then put music from the Black Eyed Peas on the stereo.

The upbeat music streaming onto the sidewalk from 1859 Madison Ave. matched her attitude. She’s ready to help cure people of the economic doldrums.

25. Blockman Joins Keller Williams -

Harold Blockman has been named the new vice president & principal broker of the Memphis Central Market Center for Keller Williams Realty.

Blockman serves as director of the board of the Memphis Area Association of Realtors and was selected for the 2007 Community Service Award by MAAR. Blockman is also president of the Tennessee GRI Association and a member of the Multi-Million Dollar Club.
