When Dr. Steven Goodman, vice chancellor for research at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, arrived at the college more than two years ago, his ambition was to launch a statewide clinical trials network.

Operating as a separate subsidiary of the University of Tennessee Research Foundation, the network was created to enable UTHSC clinical research faculty to design, solicit and conduct statewide clinical trials with the overarching goal of providing new therapeutics and medical devices aimed at improving the health of all Tennesseans.

More than a few bread crumbs on the direction the Fairgrounds redevelopment proposal is … well, developing after the second of three very important public forums last week by City Hall. The signs indicate a water park or surf park is highly unlikely, the gym at Maxine Smith STEAM Academy would go to open up Central Avenue frontage and a new gym built behind Kroc Center, a hotel by the Children’s Museum and the high school football field and track oval move from Central to where Libertyland used to be. And the city says none of this is set in stone even if it does show up on a tentative site plan among the exhibits last week.

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center has formed a partnership with a Birmingham, Alabama-based nonprofit that has almost 500 scientists and engineers working under its banner, a union meant to help advance research that could lead to new drug discovery and commercialization.

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center and Southern Research have formed a partnership to advance research that could lead to new drugs that address unmet medical needs.

The collaborative program links the drug discovery and development expertise of Birmingham, Alabama-based Southern Research with UTHSC’s four-campus research network, according to a news release.

When Dr. Steven Goodman starts his new job next month as vice chancellor for research at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, he will get under way on a mission to build a strong team of scientists that helps accelerate the university’s research efforts.

13. UTHSC Appoints New Vice Chancellor for Research -

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center has appointed Steven R. Goodman as its new vice chancellor for research.

Goodman comes to UTHSC from the State University of New York Upstate Medical University, where he was the former vice president for research, dean of the College of Graduate Studies, and professor in both the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and the Department of Pediatrics.

Morgan Bohannon has been named chairman of the board of director of Junior Achievement of Memphis & the Mid-South Inc. Bohannon, the regional market manager for iHeartMedia, became engaged with Junior Achievement when iHeartMedia sponsored the “Broadcast Center” at JA BizTown in 2012. He joined the board soon thereafter and has been involved ever since.

15. Prescription for Success -

It’s been nearly a decade since the Memphis medical community and city leaders teamed up to create a master plan for what they called the Memphis Medical Center.

The district – which follows the main corridors of Union and Madison avenues and extends from Danny Thomas Boulevard to Cleveland Street and from Peabody Avenue to the Interstate 240 loop – already was home to more than 40 organizations that specialized in everything from clinical care to research. But the Memphis Medical Center organizers wanted to improve safety and promote overall economic development, including commercial, retail and residential real estate.

16. JLS Enterprises Buys SE Market Warehouse -

A 51,000-square-foot industrial building in the Southeast submarket has traded hands. JLS Enterprises LLC purchased 4021 Delp St. in Airport Industrial Park for $850,000. The warehouse currently houses Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. and is 100 percent occupied.
