Neil Hayes, scientific director of the University of Tennessee/West Institute for Cancer Research, playing one of only a handful of leadership roles.

In less than three weeks, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center will launch its new $39.7 million, 45,000-square-foot building packed with high-tech tools and a cutting-edge training environment.

6. Director Chosen For New UTHSC Sickle Cell Disease Center -

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center has launched a new Center for Sickle Cell Disease in the College of Medicine and tapped a leader for it who will come on board in July.

Dr. Kenneth Ataga will direct the center, which is a collaborative effort between UTHSC, West Cancer Center, Methodist University Hospital and Regional One Health. Ataga is also being named the Methodist Endowed Chair in Sickle Cell Anemia. Adding to the list of job titles that await him in Memphis, Ataga – a native of Nigeria – also will serve as a professor of internal medicine, director of Non Malignant Hematology in the Division of Hematology/Oncology and the director of the Memphis Consortium for Sickle Cell Disease and Non Malignant Hematology Research.

7. Officials Talk Bioscience Research Partnership -

Three major Memphis health care institutions including the University of Tennessee Health Science Center have established a formal partnership to help spur the commercialization of bioscience and technology breakthroughs.

8. UTHSC’s Dr. David Stern Focusing on a Healthier Tennessee in New Role -

Getting invited to make a presentation at the White House last fall as part of a meeting on drug addiction turned into an epiphany of sorts for Dr. David Stern.

The discussion about substance use disorders and addictions – and how multidisciplinary clinical care can go a long way in addressing those challenges – touched a nerve with Stern. He’s spent the last six years as the Robert J. Kaplan executive dean and vice chancellor for clinical affairs at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, where his work has included recruiting more than 30 nationally recognized chairs and directors.

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center will graduate 135 health care professionals at its winter commencement Friday, Dec. 16.

“The faculty and staff of UTHSC celebrate the success of our graduates,” said Lori Gonzalez, vice chancellor of Academic, Faculty and Student Affairs at UTHSC, in a statement. “This new generation of health care providers has been educated to be skilled, compassionate and caring, and to positively impact the health of the communities where they live and work.”

16. UTHSC Appoints New Vice Chancellor for Research -

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center has appointed Steven R. Goodman as its new vice chancellor for research.

Goodman comes to UTHSC from the State University of New York Upstate Medical University, where he was the former vice president for research, dean of the College of Graduate Studies, and professor in both the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and the Department of Pediatrics.

17. Students Raise Funds for Nepal Earthquake Relief -

Bishwas Shrestha, a graduate research assistant at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, got a call from a friend late last Saturday night bearing bad news.

The friend, a fellow citizen of Nepal, was calling to tell the third-year Ph.D. student in the UTHSC Deptartment of Pediatrics about the earthquake that struck the South Asia country – a magnitude-7.8 quake that included more than 60 intense aftershocks and has killed and injured thousands.

18. UT Initials Added to Methodist University -

Starting this week, the University of Tennessee initials will appear on a Memphis hospital for the first time since 2004.

A bright orange “UT” will be added to new exterior signage at Methodist University Hospital, and the hospital will be referred to as Methodist UT Hospital in recognition of the partnership between the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and the Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare system. The new signage above the hospital’s main entrance and its new emergency department entrance were set to be unveiled on Wednesday.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – The University of Tennessee Health Science Center says it is looking at expanding its program in Nashville.

The Tennessean reports UTHSC Chancellor Steve J. Schwab said in a statement that the institution, which is based in Memphis, is eyeing "a major construction project" that would bring allow it to attract more medical students to Middle Tennessee.

Regression, at an ultimately higher cost, and eventually the realization that an opportunity slipped by.

Such was the mindset as University of Tennessee Health Science Center leaders launched a campus master plan designed to enhance UTHSC’s position as an urban academic medical center at the core of a larger revitalization of the Memphis Medical Center District.

In January, The Medical Group, an adult internal medicine practice in Germantown with seven physicians: Drs. Todd Overby, Alison Pomykala, Richard Jordan, Terinell Beaver, Steven Wener, Mark Castellaw and Dana Wright sold to Baptist Memorial Health Care Corp. after being independent since 1956.

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center broke ground Friday, June 8, on its $49 million Translational Science Research Building, which will be built on the grassy lot at the northwest corner of Union Avenue and South Manassas Street.

Twenty inventors at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center will be honored for their innovation during a ceremony and luncheon Friday, Jan. 20.

The UTHSC Annual Innovation Awards Ceremony, hosted by the UT Research Foundation, will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the UTHSC Student-Alumni Center, 800 Madison Ave.

31. Chisholm-Burns Named UTHSC Pharm School Dean -

Dr. Marie Chisholm-Burns has been named dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, making her the first African-American appointed to the position in the college’s 113-year history and only the second African-American to be named a dean in UTHSC history.

For more than a century, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Pharmacy has served as center of pharmacy education, practice and research in the Mid-South.

And on the eve of UTHSC’s September Centennial Gala, the College of Pharmacy – previously housed in six buildings on the sprawling, urban campus on Madison Avenue – is finally getting a home of its own.

Dr. David M. Stern has been named executive dean for the University of Tennessee College of Medicine campuses statewide. Reporting directly to UTHSC Chancellor Steve J. Schwab, Stern will serve as chief academic and administrative officer of the College of Medicine campuses in Memphis, Chattanooga and Knoxville.

The first African-American to be admitted to and graduate from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine will revisit his Memphis roots during Black History Month to share his story of success.

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, which marks its 100th anniversary this year, is joining the other UT campuses in celebrating 50 years of African-American achievement in 2011.
