International shipping provider DHL is undergoing a Memphis growth spurt and has expanded a service center to meet growing need.

This week, operations got fully underway at the new 30,000-square-foot facility at 3560 Air Center Cove, near the Memphis International Airport. Previously, DHL was housed at an 11,000-square-foot space at 4140 Getwell Road.

The Shelby County mortgage market had a strong 2015, and lenders expect the momentum to continue for the foreseeable future.

Among loans made at the time of purchase, banks and mortgage lenders made 9,368 mortgages in Shelby County during 2015, up 11 percent from the 8,470 mortgages during 2014, according to the latest data from real estate information company Chandler Reports, chandlerreports.com.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has formed a partnership with the city of Memphis and Shelby County governments for a pilot program to address lead-based paint issues in the community.

Memphis is the first community for the EPA to launch the initiative in its eight-state Southeastern Region 4. The year-long pilot program will address the EPA’s Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule. The rule requires that firms performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities and preschools built before 1978 become certified. In addition to EPA certification, those firms also must use certified renovators who have received EPA-approved training and follow lead-safe work practices.

For about five years now, a partnership between the city of Memphis and local banks and credit unions has been working to bring people who don’t have a checking or savings account into the mainstream banking sphere.

A group of private investors – led by Memphis businessman Michael Cook – is looking to turn a blighted Downtown block into a mixed-use development with covered parking.

Walk-Off Properties LLC bought the nine-story Hickman Building and its accompanying two-story parking garage on Sept. 30 for $1 million. The building, at 240 Madison Ave., sits across from the Fogelman Downtown YMCA.

46. Tax Incentive Changes Causing Headaches for Memphis Mayoral Candidates -

The four major candidates for Memphis mayor all have some version of the same basic answer to questions about tax incentives for economic development.

The answer: Tax incentives, and particularly payment-in-lieu-of-taxes incentives, are not the best way to grow the city’s economy and perhaps should be examined and changed. All four agree that they can’t be done away with entirely, even though the candidates’ opinions on potential changes differ.

87. Conn’s Acquires Site for Third Memphis-Area Location -

A Texas-based retailer has acquired a fully leased shopping center in Southaven and will build a new store on an outparcel of the existing retail center.

Conn’s Appliances Inc. acquired the Stateline Square Shopping Center at 550 Stateline Road in Southaven for $5 million from Brixmor Commercial Real Estate, which was doing business as NPK Southaven LLC.

88. Developers: Tennessee Brewery Work is Tough Job -

The team behind the proposed redevelopment of the long-vacant Tennessee Brewery received a 20-year tax freeze and a long-term loan for a new parking garage to help usher the Downtown development along, but officials say much work remains before the $28.1 million project becomes a reality.

89. Investors Buy Midtown Retail Buildings for $3.4 Million -

California investors have purchased two retail buildings totaling 60,000 square feet in Midtown for $3.4 million.

The retail buildings, formerly owned by Atlanta-based Home Depot, are located at 1635 and 1625 Poplar Ave., adjacent to the Home Depot store at Poplar and Angelus Street. Home Depot is maintaining its store at the shopping center at Poplar and North Avalon St., which the Atlanta-based home improvement store bought several years ago.

Memphis International Airport is ready for a little grit-n-grind.

Airport officials announced Thursday a three-year marketing partnership and business sponsorship with the Memphis Grizzlies worth more than $500,000. In a separate deal, Tony Allen will become an official airport spokesperson for one year.

An Arizona-based real estate firm has acquired a Memphis mini-storage facility for $3.8 million.

Phoenix-based AMERCO Real Estate Co. bought the American Mini Storage facility at 7399 U.S. 64 from 7399 US Highway 64 Holdings LLC, which is affiliated with Florida-based LNR Partners Inc., for $3.8 million, according to a Feb. 24 warranty deed.
