Orion Federal Credit Union is in talks to move its corporate headquarters to the former Wonder Bread bakery building.

That’s according to Orion CEO Daniel Weickenand, who said Thursday, Aug. 17, the credit union saw an opportunity to relocate its headquarters from 7845 U.S. 64 in the Wolfchase area “to transition a visibly neglected neighborhood in Memphis.”

A plan to replace the former Red Cross building in Midtown with a 12-unit luxury gated community was approved by the Shelby County Land Use Control Board at its Thursday, August 10 meeting.

Last month, developers Lee Askew and Martin Edwards presented their plans to nearby residents at a public meeting where it was received with mostly favorable results.

First day of school redux on Tuesday for students in Memphis Catholic Schools and it is a half-day. The first day of classes in most of the county’s other schools Monday went smoothly. Shelby County Schools reports more than 6,000 students registered on the first day of school despite another concerted effort at numerous events to register students in advance. That’s in a school system of approximately 96,000 students.

9. Cordova Apartment Community Sells for $27.9M -

The Charleston, a 284-unit apartment community on the east side of Houston Levee Road just south of U.S. 64, has sold in a $27.9 million deal.

In the transaction, Peak Capital Partners, doing business as PC Charleston LLC, purchased the 24-acre parcel from local developer Wesscorp Communities, doing business as Charleston HL Apartment Community LLC. Charles W. Misenhelter, signed the deed on behalf of the sellers.

A new plan submitted to city officials would breathe new life into the former Wonder Bread factory that used to fill the Memphis Medical District with the smell of fresh bread before it closed in 2013.

11. Developer Pursues New Cooper-Young Apartment Complex -

A Los Angeles-based developer has submitted plans to construct a 25-unit apartment complex in the heart of Cooper-Young.

Focal Point Investment wants to develop a two-building apartment complex with 25 studio apartments on the 0.4-acre vacant lot located across the street from First Congregational Church at 999 S. Cooper St., according to an application submitted to the Shelby County Board of Adjustment.

12. Last Word: ICE Raids, Who's Buying Afton Grove and Malco Powerhouse Plans -

A protest Sunday evening at the Prescott Place Apartments after federal ICE agents – Immigration and Customs Enforcement – took people into custody there and at Emerald Ridge and Corner Park apartments Sunday morning. The group of organizations protesting the federal action – Memphis Coalition of Concerned Citizens, Cosecha and SURJ Memphis -- say Memphis Police assisted in the immigration operation. Memphis Police deny they were involved in any way. No estimate from ICE on how many people were detained.

13. Last Word: Closing the Door, Midtown Rents and Red West's Many Roles -

It didn’t take the Shelby County Commission very long Wednesday to close the door on its budget season – about 20 minutes in the day’s special meeting to approve a county property tax rate of $4.11 on third and final reading. That’s not a quick up or down vote. And it took just a bit longer because there is still some discussion about whether this was a reduction in the tax rate or a tax cut in the sense that a homeowner in Shelby County would understand the term.

With the help of a $30 million federal Choice Neighborhoods grant, the Memphis Housing Authority plans to raze the 420 units of Foote Homes that date back to the 1940s to make way for Memphis’ first sustainable subdivision.

Shelby County commissioners on Monday, June 20, approved the donation of the two tax-delinquent parcels south of Raleigh Lagrange Road and east of Old Austin Peay Highway.

The Tennessee Housing Development Agency plans to inspect at least a dozen apartment complexes in Memphis where federal subsidies pay tenants’ rent.

THDA executive director Ralph Perrey said the agency’s authority to make the inspections resumes in July. And the agency isn’t saying which properties will be visited “so as not to ruin the surprise,” Perrey said Wednesday, May 25, as he announced the resumption of the inspections.

99. Poplar Place Apartments Sell for $15.3 Million -

The 220-unit Poplar Place apartments in East Memphis have sold for $15.3 million, or $69,409 per unit.

Brooklyn-based Poplar Place TN Townhomes LLC purchased the complex in a May 6 warranty deed from Poplar Place Associates LLC, a company of Newton Square, Penn.-based GMH Capital Partners LP. The deed lists 1669 Randolph Place as the real property address.

More on the move by Bank of New York to have a receiver appointed for the Warren and Tulane Apartments currently owned by Global Ministries Foundation.

GMF CEO Rev. Richard Hamlet responded Wednesday to the filing in Memphis federal court saying he agrees that a receiver for the property is a good idea. But he doesn’t agree – and in fact, strongly disagrees with the claims and reasoning behind the bank’s call for the receiver.
