Latoria Taylor has been named vice president of development for Junior Achievement of Memphis and the Mid-South. She oversees all fundraising and marketing efforts for the nonprofit, which is dedicated to teaching children “how business works” and inspiring them to own their economic success.

Todd Kelly Jr. can’t believe it’s his last hoorah. The senior safety from Webb School of Knoxville enters his final season at Tennessee with thoughts of how it all started in fall of 2014.

How do you repurpose a blighted old Burger King? That’s the question Scott Crosby was facing. “Initially we thought we’d make it a bar, or maybe a restaurant,” he says. “But the building was too dilapidated. Then we thought, maybe a parking lot, but the space was too small.”

You’ve seen stories here about how difficult it can be to assemble land and financing for a hotel project. Supermarkets have proven much more difficult to pull off at least in Memphis where food deserts are a problem in several parts of town.

12. Former Mayor A C Wharton Joins Board at Trezevant -

Trezevant recently announced that it has named A C Wharton, Jr. to its board of directors. Wharton is the former mayor of both the city of Memphis and Shelby County. An attorney by trade, he has also served in a number of leadership roles, including as director of Memphis Area Legal Services, chief public defender for Shelby County and chairman of the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.

13. Shipmon Joins Lending Team at Paragon -

Thomas “Tee” Shipmon has joined Paragon Bank as senior vice president, specialty lending. In this role, Shipmon is responsible for developing products for Paragon that solve customers’ challenges and that are profitable to the bank. Currently, specialty lending is providing short-term commercial construction loans to companies, often franchisees, that are expanding operations.

14. Hill to Lead MIFA’s COOL Program -

Andrea Hill has been named manager of Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association’s COOL (College Offers Opportunities for Life) program, which provides higher education counseling, life skills training and mentorship opportunities to 11th- and 12th-graders from G.W. Carver and Booker T. Washington High Schools. Hill previously worked as director of volunteer services for Cool Girls Inc. in Atlanta.

15. Pocket Park Takes Shape on Madison -

For several years, Scott Crosby, an attorney with Burch, Porter & Johnson PLLC and co-owner of The Brass Door restaurant on Madison Avenue Downtown, had considered what, if anything, could be done with the shuttered Burger King restaurant across the street, a decaying eyesore in an otherwise vibrant strip of the street.

Meg Crosby’s career might be summed up as an exercise in adaptation.

A principal with the boutique human resources firm PeopleCap, Crosby left her hometown of Memphis for college at the University of Richmond for a double major in English and interpersonal communications. Her pragmatic father insisted on throwing some business courses into the mix.

The Downtown strip of Madison Avenue from the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law to Fielder Square Apartments in its prime was the city’s financial hub.

It’s seen some successes in recent times – new businesses opening, building renovations and the removal of the makeshift wall at Main and Second streets that interrupted traffic for two years.

Seamus Loftus sits down for an interview on the mezzanine of his new Irish pub, The Brass Door, looks over at a ventilation duct next to him, runs a finger along one edge and purses his lips in disapproval. He calls a staff member over. “Look,” he says, “I’m not mad, and I don’t remember who’s in charge upstairs, but there’s dust all over these vents. This is unacceptable. Just bring me a rag and I’ll wipe them off.”

Liese Leonard recently joined the Madison Hotel as director of sales.

Leonard is responsible for overseeing all internal and external sales efforts for the hotel including developing new accounts, maintaining existing accounts and supervising all sales and catering associates.

Kevin M. Spiegel Friday will begin work as chief executive officer and administrator of Methodist University Hospital.

Spiegel is board-certified in health care administration and is a fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives. He previously served as president and chief operating officer of Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren, Ohio.

31. Shoemaker Financial's Allen Earns Circle of Excellence -

Frank Allen, a certified financial planner and financial adviser with Shoemaker Financial, has achieved the Circle of Excellence award from Securian Financial Services for his performance in 2007.

32. Barrow Named Chef de Cuisine At Capriccio Grill -

The Peabody Hotel has named Brian Barrow chef de cuisine for Capriccio Grill, an Italian steakhouse. Barrow began his culinary career at 27. He attended Johnson & Wales University's College of Culinary Arts in Miami. He previously was a chef at the Ambassador Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and with Do & Co International Catering.

33. Gwaltney to Head Senior Housing Crime Prevention Foundation -

Peter K. Gwaltney will join the Senior Housing Crime Prevention Foundation as chief executive officer and as vice chairman of the board of directors, effective Jan. 1. He has served as the CEO of the Louisiana Bankers Association since 1999. He also has served on numerous boards at the state and national level, including the American Bankers Insurance Association board of directors, the American Bankers Professional and Fidelity Insurance Association board of directors.
