NEW YORK (AP) – Sales of small businesses are finally making big gains.
Fred Barkman, who last year bought Spectra Laboratories, a company that tests land and water for toxins, is in the process of purchasing a second environmental lab. Both companies were owned by retirees who wanted to sell but had to wait for the economy to improve after the recession devastated the small business market.

Higher unemployment and foreclosure rates, especially in South Atlantic and Mountain states, raised the nation's economic stress in November, according to The Associated Press' monthly analysis.
One month after economic stress reached an 18-month low nationally, it rose in three-quarters of the 3,141 counties the AP analyzed and in 39 states. Unemployment and foreclosures edged up in more than two-thirds of the states. Bankruptcies rose in half the states.
3. Air France-KLM, Delta to Reap $12B a Year

Delta Air Lines Inc., Air France and KLM signed a deal Wednesday to combine two separate joint venture agreements to create a more integrated trans-Atlantic powerhouse they said will generate $12 billion in annual revenue and provide better travel options for customers.
