1. Wiuff Looks to Boost Engagement As MAAR Board President -

Lauren Harkins Wiuff, a broker at Marx-Bensdorf Realtors, has begun her tenure as the 2018 president of the Memphis Area Association of Realtors board of directors. Wiuff, who will serve a one-year term as board president, is also a lifetime member of MAAR’s Multi Million Dollar Club. At Marx-Bensdorf, she leads a team that includes her sister, Stephanie Sheahan.

A very busy Monday and I feel like some of this is may be fueled by some of us just now getting completely over the flu or someone close who has the flu for the first time in the New Year. Whatever the case, Monday came with a curtain call of sorts by Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam, a court order on the Confederate monuments, year-end stats on crime in Memphis and countywide… a PILOT here, a building permit or three there.

3. Rolling on the River -

Despite being the fifth-largest inland port in the United States, the Port of Memphis often gets outshined by its counterparts like Memphis International Airport and BNSF Railway’s intermodal facilities. 

4. High Water -

The city’s 3.3 miles of floodwalls and five miles of levees held in the 2011 near record rise of the Mississippi River at Memphis.

But in the four years since, the walls have continued to settle by as much as 18 inches in some places.

9. Industrial Revolution -

Frank C. Pidgeon Industrial Park was completed in 1967, but it’s only now, four-plus decades later, that the property is finally realizing its full potential.

The 3,500-acre industrial park was developed when Memphis and Shelby County paid roughly $4.5 million to buy the land in the late 1950s after city, county and Port Commission leaders saw the need for a large industrial park following the creation of Presidents Island.

13. Congressional Delegation Tours Presidents Island -

The International Port of Memphis played host to a handful of influential guests Friday, June 21, just as the city and its partners are seeking a large federal grant to help expand the industrial area.

14. Relief Could Be Coming for Low River -

Mississippi River water levels approaching historic lows in the Mid-South are expected to rise during the next few weeks due to increased precipitation to the northeast.

“Conditions on the river are greatly improving due to rain in the Ohio River basin in the past few days, and we are expecting a nice rainfall event there this weekend that will help the river rise more,” said David Berretta, chief of hydraulics and the hydrology branch for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Memphis district. “When conditions are this low, it doesn’t take much rain to produce a decent rise in river levels.”

15. Commission to Vote on Industrial Land Sale -

Shelby County Commissioners take up the proposed sale Monday, Dec. 3, of 33.6 acres of land in the Frank C. Pidgeon Industrial Park in southwest Memphis.

Carolyn Hardy, owner of the Hardy Bottling Co. and consultant to the Blues City Brewery operation that later bought the plant, wants to buy the last available roadside acreage in the industrial park for a business to store and stage modular containers.

The workweek began at many Memphis companies with a review of flood contingency plans.

The week ahead promises to be a challenging one.

By Monday evening, the National Weather Service had changed its forecast to keep the May 10 crest date for the Mississippi River at Memphis. But they upped the river level from 45 feet to 48 feet.

18. Port of Memphis to Pay Real Estate Commissions -

The Memphis and Shelby County Port Commission has recently passed a new real estate commission policy for the sale and leasing of port property.

Each transaction by the commission will be based upon circumstances and market conditions. The new policy reverses 1991’s policy, which discouraged commissions to real estate agents, Tom Fisher, chairman of the Port Commission, said in a statement.

19. Few Surprises At Filing Deadline -

About half of Shelby County's delegation to the Tennessee Legislature won re-election at Thursday's filing deadline for candidates on the Aug. 7 ballot.

Eight of the 16 state House seats had only one candidate - the incumbent. And all three of the state Senate seats on the ballot were incumbent-only affairs.

The Engineers' Club of Memphis will hold its weekly meeting today at noon at the Holiday Inn-University of Memphis, 3700 Central Ave. Cost is $12 and no reservations are required. Randy Richardson, deputy director of the Port of Memphis, will speak on "International Gateway - Memphis."
