Here comes the transition in the county mayor’s office. Shelby County Mayor-elect Lee Harris announced Wednesday that the transition team will be co-chaired by former Downtown Memphis Commission president Paul Morris and former Grizz coach Lionel Hollins. Harris’s campaign manager Danielle Inez will be executive director of the transition team. They are soliciting applications to be on the transition team and the resumes have to be in soon. Harris takes office as outgoing mayor Mark Luttrell leaves at the end of this month.

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Donald Trump couldn't stop talking about the red carpets, military parades and fancy dinners that were lavished upon him during state visits on his recent tour of Asia. "Magnificent," he declared at one point on the trip.

4. Railgarten Addresses ‘Confusion’ About Use of Shipping Containers -

If Railgarten’s intention was to be a transformative force in the section of Midtown between Overton Square and Cooper-Young, then its first week of business has been a resounding success.

However, following what the venue called “confusion” regarding its use of shipping containers as a design element, Railgarten issued a statement outlining where they currently stand with the Shelby County Office of Planning and Development.

NEW YORK (AP) – In the 15-year existence of her girls' empowerment organization, Joanne Smith has dealt with funders and donors but never quite like this: a foundation putting $90 million toward helping girls of color by letting them determine their needs instead of being told what the funds have to be used for.

6. 2 Midtown Restaurants Seek to Incorporate Shipping Containers -

The Broad Avenue Arts District has long been innovative when it comes to the creative reuse of formerly blighted properties, and its newest addition seeks to continue this trend.

The owners of City & State on Broad Avenue filed paperwork with the city of Memphis requesting approval to convert an abandoned liquor store into a diner – fittingly named The Liquor Store – that will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.

7. Final Goodbye: Roll Call of Some of Those Who Died in 2016 -

Death claimed transcendent political figures in 2016, including Cuba's revolutionary leader and Thailand's longtime king, but also took away royals of a different sort: kings of pop music, from Prince and David Bowie to George Michael.

“Demand is back” was the theme at the ninth annual Southern Lodging Summit held Downtown this week at The Peabody hotel and the Memphis Cook Convention Center.

Hoteliers and industry execs gathered for the 2011 Summit, which was organized by the Metropolitan Memphis Hotel & Lodging Association and hotel consulting firm Pinkowski & Co.

The Memphis chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council on Aug. 6 will sponsor an educational seminar highlighting the residential program EcoBuild.

EcoBuild is a program created by Memphis Light Gas and Water Division to promote energy efficient technologies and environmentally friendly materials.

21. Business Showcases Green Rehab of Downtown Space -

The building is nondescript, but the door is the real attention-getter at the new Downtown headquarters of Big River Engineering and Manufacturing.

Built of mahogany boards, the sliding door is solid, tall and handsome.

22. Highland Hip -

The Highland strip is growing a skyline. The Stratum on Highland Street, a five-story apartment complex, was the first new structure west of the University of Memphis to sprout last August on the storied commercial strip itself.

23. Obama Says Unemployment Will Keep Ticking Up -

WASHINGTON (AP) - As he conceded that unemployment will keep growing, President Barack Obama on Tuesday said new jobs will require greater training and post-high school education to achieve a better skilled work force.
