6. EDGE Board Holds Inaugural Meeting -

The new Economic Development Growth Engine approved its existence Wednesday, Aug. 17, while also addressing some confusing technicalities.

“The president is selected by both mayors – this seems cumbersome,” former Shelby County Commissioner and EDGE director Deidre Malone said at the organization’s inaugural meeting at City Hall. “Having worked in the private sector and for an organization with a similar structure, I think it’s very interesting.”

Craig Esrael has been the president and CEO of First South Financial Credit Union for 28 years.

When he arrived there in 1983, fresh out of graduate school, he was faced with a financially distressed corporation with six quarters of losses and $32 million in assets. It was his passion for helping others – which remains his driving force today – that made it possible to turn the company around.

Natasha Bowen, president-elect of the Memphis Chapter of The National Association of Women Business Owners was recently honored with the Best New Market Award by The Growth Coach, a North American franchise system of small business coaches. Bowen is the owner of The Growth Coach in Memphis.

The Bartlett Area Chamber of Commerce offers “Staying Ahead of the Curve” free workshops the first Wednesday of every month for members.
