University of Memphis coach Penny Hardaway has added two more players to his roster. Shooting guard Antwann Jones signed with the Tigers after being released from his national letter of intent with Texas A&M. Isaiah Maurice signed after playing one season at Kansas State and one season at South Plains junior college.

Butch Jones let us in on a little secret recently when he said his freshman running backs will play for Tennessee this season.

That’s plural – running backs.

Jones’ plan is to use all three freshman backs – Ty Chandler, Tim Jordan and Trey Coleman – in some sort of rotation behind junior John Kelly. Given the nature of the game, putting the football in the hands of freshmen is risky business. But Jones is taking the plunge.

Tennessee is lagging much of the nation when it comes to the ability to remove scoundrels from public office.

And, make no mistake, the Volunteer State has had its fair share of ne’er-do-well politicians who would likely have been thrown out of office if the proper procedures had been in place.

10. Millington School Board Meets Public -

A group of 100 citizens in Millington Tuesday, Nov. 12, had a lot of questions and angst about the coming of a Millington municipal school system.

The town hall meeting was the first gathering of the seven Millington school board members elected Nov. 7. They won’t take office until next month, so a lot of the questions at the Millington Civic Center Tuesday evening from a room that was mostly teachers and other educators were about decisions the board hasn’t started making yet.

Despite a summer of unusually high temperatures and a nationwide drought that’s been called the worst the U.S. has seen in 25 years, Memphis’ farmers markets have been thriving, according to many participants.

13. Charities Turn Super Sunday into Day of Giving -

Several Memphis-based nonprofits are using Super Bowl Sunday as an opportunity to encourage citizens to give back to their community.

For the seventh year in a row, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis, a nonprofit housing ministry dedicated to providing decent housing for all members of the community, is asking football fans to party with a purpose this Sunday for its annual Home Team Huddle.

15. Latest Numbers Paint Dreary Homebuilding Picture -

The homebuilding industry suffered another period of slower sales and fewer starts in October, signaling a continued crisis in the housing market.

Shelby County saw just 61 home sales by builders last month, a staggering 61.6 percent decline from the 159 homes sold in October 2007, according to the latest data from real estate information company Chandler Reports, www.chandlerreports.com. Last month’s total even marked a 53.1 percent dropoff from the 130 homes builders sold in September.

16. Accounting Board Adopts Guidance -

The standard-setting board for corporate accounting adopted new guidance on Friday that will give banks a break in the distressed market and could boost their balance sheets.

The five-member Financial Accounting Standards Board decided to provide some flexibility in applying “fair value” accounting where there is no market for a security – like the market for banks’ mortgage-backed assets that has been dysfunctional for months.

Gameday Baseball, called the best-kept secret in Cordova by its president, Leigh Fox, is doing great things. Since opening in 2005, the sports complex has been instrumental in drawing national attention to the area from people involved in youth sports.

18. Big Three Auto Dealers Squeezed -

The credit crunch squeezing Detroit's Big Three auto makers is now spreading to some of their dealers, adding financial pressure to a group already strained by this year's big drop in auto sales.

The latest and most prominent example is Bill Heard Enterprises Inc., one of the largest Chevrolet dealers in the country, with 2007 sales of $2.1 billion. Earlier this month GMAC LLC, the financing company partly owned by General Motors Corp., stopped doing business with Bill Heard over concerns about financial losses related to the privately owned chain of 14 stores, Bill Heard confirmed through a spokesman.

The 2008 Bartlett Business Expo will be held today at the Bartlett Recreation Center, 7700 Flaherty Place. The Bartlett Area Chamber, the city of Bartlett and St. Francis Hospital-Bartlett are sponsoring the event. 20. Numbers Show Homebuilding Nightmare in Shelby -

Connie Neal likens her homebuilding company to a fairytale. At a time when builders' woes are splashed prominently in headlines each day, the activity at Affinity Homes LLC plugs along.

Neal, who owns the Cordova-based company with her husband, Jimmy, said Affinity has even hired new employees while many homebuilders slash payroll or close shop altogether.

21. Gerard Appointed Administrator at Methodist Cancer Center -

Dr. Dava F. Gerard has been appointed administrator for the Methodist Healthcare Cancer Center. She previously was the founding vice president and chief operating officer of the Nevada Cancer Institute in Las Vegas.
