1. Last Word: Mason Temple 50 Years Later, Medical Pot Dies in Nashville and Fire -

Mason Temple still looks pretty much the same as it did in 1968 when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. came there to give what would be his last speech – the Mountaintop speech – the night before his assassination. Tuesday evening, 50 years to the day that King gave that speech, the Church of God In Christ sanctuary was awash and aglow in multi-colored lights as a capacity invitation-only crowd gathered to mark the occasion.

Back in the summer, Memphis-based First Tennessee Bank was listed as the fifth most reputable bank in the nation in a report from the industry-focused news publication “American Banker.”

First Horizon National Corp., the parent company of First Tennessee Bank, has hired a new chief communications officer to replace former head of corporate communications Kim Cherry, who recently left after more than three decades to launch her own firm.

What do you want to be when you grow up? It’s a question commonly asked of children, with a slate of common answers: doctor, teacher, astronaut.

Ask Kim Cherry, executive vice president of corporate communications at First Tennessee Bank, what she wanted to be when she grew up, and the answer is a bit less standard.

9. Morris Marketing, Archer Malmo, DCA Take Top PRSA Memphis Honors -

Morris Marketing Group, Archer Malmo and DCA took top honors at the 23rd annual Vox Awards hosted recently by the PRSA Memphis chapter at Visible Music College.

Morris Marketing Agency won Best in Show for Campaigns Brand Management/Reputation (more than $7,500) and for Special Events One Day (more than $7,500). Archer Malmo and DCA tied for Best in Show for Tactics, with Archer winning the Media Tactics: Press Conference category and DCA winning Print Tactics: Visual Elements.

10. Anne Dixon Joins BRIDGES as CFO -

Anne Dixon has joined BRIDGES as vice president of finance and chief financial officer. Dixon, who is a Bridge Builders alumna, is responsible in her new role for financial reporting and analysis to help BRIDGES leadership in performing their responsibilities.

Seated at the same table as guard Tony Allen for the Grizzlies’ 13th Annual Tip-Off Luncheon on Monday, Oct. 27, fan Kim Cherry couldn’t help but notice The Grindfather’s Army fatigues sport coat. It was the booming fashion statement of the day.

13. Touch of History -

For its 150th anniversary, First Tennessee Bank didn’t want to only blow out the candles, so to speak.

In addition to commemorating the enviable milestone of longevity in an industry as frequently upended as banking, the Memphis-based financial institution wanted to help customers directly feel the impact of the bank’s presence in their community. At the same time, the bank also wants to let customers literally reach out and touch the bank’s history.

14. Sesley-Baymon Named CEO of Memphis Urban League -

Tonja Sesley-Baymon has been appointed president and CEO of the Memphis Urban League by its board of directors. Sesley-Baymon, who has worked with the league for eight years, previously served as programs director for the 70-year-old organization. In her new role, she will provide executive leadership to the league and advocate on behalf of social justice and economic issues affecting Memphis.

15. Junior Achievement Adds Business Savvy to Education -

For Kim Cherry, executive vice president of corporate communications for First Horizon National Corp., a panel discussion with Kemmons Wilson Jr. and Pitt Hyde drove home the rich history of the city’s entrepreneurial spirit.

Fifth Third Bank of Cincinnati wants a federal court to order Memphis-based First Horizon National Corp. not to touch Fifth Third's new signage and other property it recently installed at nine Atlanta-area bank branches.

31. First Horizon Sells 34 Bank Branches Outside Tennessee -

In a move designed to redeploy its capital to higher-return markets, First Horizon National Corp., the parent company of First Tennessee Bank National Association, announced Tuesday the sale of all 34 of its First Horizon Bank branches outside of Tennessee.

32. First Horizon Eliminates Positions -

First Horizon National Corp. has been trimming its employee headcount since the beginning of the year.

John Daniel, head of employee services for First Horizon/First Tennessee Bank, said the Memphis-based company has been reducing expenses by eliminating positions.
