6. SCS Board Eyes Three Charter School Closings -

Shelby County Schools board members voted Tuesday, April 26, to close three Memphis charter schools performing in the bottom 5 percent of all schools statewide in terms of student achievement.

And the board set in motion a series of public hearing on closing two conventional high schools – Northside and Carver – as well as the Messick Adult Center.

7. Dixon Museum Renovations, Upgrades Enhance Possibilities -

Upgrades to HVAC systems aren’t always sexy, but those types of improvements can make the difference in a museum getting an exhibit or being passed over for institutions with more up-to-date facilities.

8. Ruling Allows Closure of Tennessee Developmental Center -

A federal judge has accepted the state’s proposal to close Tennessee’s last large facility housing mentally disabled people by the end of next June.

Media report that Judge Kevin Sharpe issued his ruling on Thursday, about a week after hearing arguments in Nashville for and against the closure of the Greene Valley Developmental Center in Greenville, which has nearly 100 residents and about 600 workers.

9. Dixon Opens Petit Palais Jewelry Exhibition -

A rare display of French jewelry and designs at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens traces the history of jewelry design from the late 17th century to after World War II.

The exhibition, “Bijoux parisiens: French jewelry from the Petit Palais,” marks the second collaboration in three years between the Petit Palais in Paris and the Dixon Gallery and Gardens.
