1. REI ‘Raises the Bar’ on Outdoor Recreation in Memphis -

REI’s new Memphis store is promoting local outdoor recreation areas in addition to the sales of its own camping and outdoor gear.

The consumer co-op not only is donating $20,000 total to the Wolf River, Overton Park and Shelby Farms Park conservancies for trail restoration and other improvements, but is leading its nearly 50 employees to engage with and volunteer in the parks.

2. Bike Share, Greenway and Bike Lane Efforts Point Toward Common Goal -

Four years after it made its tentative debut with the opening of the Overton Park Bike Gate, the Hampline, across East Parkway from the eastern end of Overton Park, is about to become permanent.

“The Hampline that exists today is about to be changed,” city bikeway and pedestrian program manager Nicholas Oyler said on WKNO-TV’s “Behind The Headlines.”

Well, this is off to a rocky start. Jaren Jackson Jr. indicated he didn’t want to come to Memphis until minutes before the Grizz used their number 4 pick in Thursday evening’s NBA draft to select him and reverse years of bad history in draft selections. That was a lot to ask for in the pick of the youngest player in the draft at 18 years of age. But that’s what drafts in the NFL and NBA have come to be about – big moments, declaring victory and celebrating all before anything pans out.

With a ribbon of shoestrings, leaders of the Wolf River Conservancy formally opened Saturday, Oct. 21, the westernmost park of the Wolf River Greenway – a 115-acre site with a 1.2 mile long trail loop on the north end of Mud Island.

The name of the westernmost point of the Wolf River Greenway is still a working title. But the 115 acres on the north end of Mud Island has emerged from decades of overgrowth, used tires other materials dumped there to become an actual park.

Saturday night on Beale Street is more than a catch phrase for businesses there.

It is chapters in old, out-of-print books like Lt. George W. Lee’s “Where The Blues Began” that you can only see in the Memphis-Shelby County Room of the Central Library. You can’t check the book out because of its rarity and age. But you can also find references to the lore of Saturday nights on Beale Street on plaques in the entertainment district that current patrons walk past without even noticing.

9. Bartlett Opens Greenway; Ghost River Natural Area Grows -

The city of Bartlett has 29 parks, and every one of them has a walking trail. But the path that formally opens to the public Friday, April 21, at a trailhead at Santa Valley Road and U.S. 64 is Bartlett’s first venture in a full-fledged greenway.

10. Wolf River Conservancy Tree Planting is Feb. 25 -

The Wolf River Conservancy will be holding its 12th annual tree planting on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 9 a.m. to noon at Shelby Farms Park. The planting is the largest volunteer event for the conservancy with an anticipated 400-plus volunteers participating.

11. Green Spaces Valuable Assets for Memphis, Citizens -

Shelby Farms Park’s biggest project – Heart of the Park – is open. The Wolf River Greenway is on track for completion no later than 2020. Overton Park has come through the greensward controversy and is moving ahead with park enhancements.

12. Green Renaissance -

As director of Shelby Farms Park Conservancy, Jen Andrews has been on the front lines of what can fairly be called a green revival in Memphis. And she is amazed at how much change has occurred over the last decade, a rebirth that spans not just across the miles but now seems embedded in the city’s psyche.

It sounds simple enough, the idea that, as Wolf River Conservancy executive director Keith Cole puts it, “One of the basic premises of connectivity is you never want to build a bridge to nowhere.”

20. CFGM Grants $220K To Group of 17 Nonprofits -

The Community Foundation of Greater Memphis has announced its latest round of grants, some $220,000 in “capacity building” funds for area nonprofits.

“These grants are for mature nonprofits,” said Ashley Harper, director of grants and initiatives for the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis. “This is not startup funding. We feel like with our limited budget, this is a good niche for us.”

26. Wolf River Greenway Planning Pushes Route Further North -

Now that you know the Greenline, here comes the Greenway.

After almost a year of behind-the-scenes planning, coordination and fundraising, the Wolf River Conservancy is about to go public with plans to add another 18 miles to the existing 2.6 miles of the Wolf River Greenway in Shelby County.

27. Corporate Contribution -

On a beautiful spring morning last week more than 100 local FedEx employees came together along the banks of the Wolf River to do a beautiful thing.

It was the 40th anniversary of FedEx, whose employees volunteered with the Wolf River Conservancy to pull up invasive privet, plant wildflowers and trees, paint sewer vents and build nesting boxes for indigenous birds.

Judy Sulton White has joined BankTennessee as a mortgage loan specialist. White has worked in the mortgage industry for 30 years and will focus on new-home financing options, mortgage refinances and custom construction loans.

31. Cole Takes Reins Of Wolf River Conservancy -

Many Memphians might know that the Wolf River Conservancy is a nonprofit and land trust committed to conserving and protecting the Wolf River corridor as a natural sustainable resource.

What many do not know, however, is that, as of 2010, 10,000 adults and children were enrolled in educational and recreational programs either conducted or facilitated by the conservancy itself.

The Wolf River Conservancy board of directors recently voted unanimously to hire Keith Cole as executive director.

Cole began his new position April 4, bringing a background of successful strategic and tactical planning, human resource management, team building and leadership, as well as marketing and public relations.

Small businesses are especially vulnerable when disaster strikes, whether it’s a flood, earthquake, tornado, fire or even terrorist activity.

An estimated 25 percent of businesses do not reopen following a major disaster, according to the Institute for Business and Home Safety, which means small-business owners need to make emergency preparedness a priority.
