Hey Vols fans, Happy New Year. May your 2017 year in Tennessee sports be better than your 2016 year in Tennessee sports. Perhaps, a fresh start is what we all need. Let’s face it. The Music City Bowl wasn’t where Tennessee wanted the 2016 football season to end. The Vols were picked to win the SEC East Division in preseason and floundered to an 8-4 record in the regular season, 4-4 in the SEC. Their football season was about the norm for most UT sports in 2016: average. Here are some dates to mark in hope of better things ahead in 2017...

Who knew Fred’s could become probably the most complex local business story of the year? More post mortem on the $950 million deal announced this week in which the Memphis-based corporation bought 865 Rite Aid stores from Walgreens and Rite-Aid, who are working toward an acquisition and merger deal of their own.

3. Cohen Complains of Fake Obama Endorsement -

The latest battle over an endorsement in the Democratic primary for the 9th Congressional District isn’t a confrontation between Democratic incumbent Steve Cohen and his challenger, Ricky Wilkins.

4. Gold Strike Promotes Slade to PR Manager -

Elizabeth Slade has been promoted to public relations manager at Gold Strike Casino Resort. In her new role at the MGM Resorts International property, Slade will lead in developing and executing integrated marketing communication plans with components such as media relations, social media strategy, community partnerships and brand management.

5. KIPP Memphis Hosts Dress for Success Day -

On Friday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Memphis middle school students from KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) DIAMOND Academy, 230 Henry St., will host Dress for Success Day, where students dressed in business attire will ask community leaders questions concerning their fields of work.

6. Mathews Named to New Post at FedEx Institute -

Eric Mathews was named associate director of corporate research and development at the University of Memphis FedEx Institute of Technology. Mathews previously served FIT in temporary roles directing research and business development and was part of the institute's founding executive management. He earned a bachelor's degree from Rhodes College and a master's degree from the University of Memphis.

7. Estate Planning Council Elects Officers -

The Memphis Estate Planning Council announced the following officers for 2005-2006: David B. Jones, president; Frank E. Davis, vice president; Jeffrey E. Thompson, secretary; James L. Ferguson Jr., treasurer; and Mike Wood, immediate past president. Other executive committee members are Kermit B. Kaiser, Leanne W. McCullough, Samuel N. Graham and Teresa R. Hurst.
