4. Suburban Challengers Emerge at Filing Deadline For November Ballot -

Thirteen incumbents in the four suburban municipal elections on the Nov. 8 ballot were effectively re-elected to new terms at the Thursday, Aug. 18, filing deadline for the set of 30 races.

And Chris Denson claimed a seat on the Millington School Board with no opposition for the position incumbent Donald Holsinger is giving up to run for alderman in Millington.

The mayors of Collierville and Millington are running for re-election on the November ballot and as the noon Thursday, Aug. 18, filing deadline approaches for the Bartlett, Germantown, Collierville and Millington municipal ballots the two mayors have challengers.

7. Collierville Board Grants FedEx Tax Break Extension -

The Collierville Board of Mayor and Aldermen ratified a 20-year tax break for the FedEx World Technology Center during its Monday, Jan. 25, meeting.

FedEx will pay nearly $25.2 million over the period and will save about $75.5 million. As part of the retention PILOT agreement, FedEx will invest $40 million in real property and personal property upgrades.

8. The Grind -

For Memphis musicians like John Paul Keith, the grind is not a catchy rallying cry or slogan. It’s a philosophy, a work ethic that allows musicians like him to earn a living dedicating themselves to their craft in one of the most important music cities in the world.

9. Won’t be the same without the head ball coach -

I miss Steve Spurrier.

It won’t be the same without Spurrier coaching South Carolina when Tennessee (4-4, 2-3 SEC) plays host to the Gamecocks (3-5, 1-5) on Saturday.

It wasn’t the same this week without Spurrier throwing a jab or two at UT leading up to the game.

10. Jones, Vols Make Honor Roll With Recruiting Class -

KNOXVILLE – Butch Jones has done it again.

Tennessee’s football coach has created a national buzz with his 2015 recruiting class.

UT finished with the No. 4 class in the nation as rated by 247Sports and ended up ranked No. 5 by Rivals when the Feb. 4 national signing day was over.

11. Shelby County Homebuilding Activity Continues to Slow -

Homebuilding in Shelby County was off last year’s pace again in November, with builders pulling fewer permits and selling fewer homes than in November 2013.

Shelby County homebuilders filed 43 permits last month, down 29.5 percent from 61 permits in November 2013, according to real estate information company Chandler Reports, www.chandlerreports.com. The 43 permits filed in November is down 31.7 percent from the 63 permits filed in October.

12. Vols Hope to Snap 20-Game Road Slump vs. Ranked Opponents -

KNOXVILLE – It doesn’t get much easier for the University of Tennessee’s football team.

The Sept. 20 open date has come and gone. UT’s coaches and players had ample time to digest and dissect details of the 34-10 loss to No. 4-ranked Oklahoma on Sept. 13 and a week to prepare for a challenge just as formidable.

13. South Carolina Back in SEC East Race -

The South Carolina defense still has improvement to make, but in beating Georgia 38-35 last Saturday the Gamecocks made a fourth-quarter goal-line stand and reasserted their presence in the SEC East Division.

14. High-Flying Vols Can’t Overlook Arkansas State -

KNOXVILLE – You had to be hiding under a rock not to hear the buzz this week about the University of Tennessee’s football team.

One person not reveling in the Vols’ 38-7 season opening victory over Utah State on Sunday night was UT coach Butch Jones.

After an initial offering went so well earlier this year, a group of area homebuilders has acquired 17 more lots at The Village at Spring Creek Ranch from Boyle Investment Co.

Mike Phillips has joined Spirco Manufacturing as general manager and vice president of operations. In his new role, Phillips will oversee all divisions of the metal-building manufacturer and direct its organizational needs.

19. Obama Carries Shelby, Cohen Over Flinn and Two Tax Hikes Defeated -

President Barack Obama carried Shelby County in unofficial Nov. 6 election returns as his Republican challenger Mitt Romney took the state’s 11 electoral votes.

Voter turnout in the most popular election cycle among Shelby County voters was 61.9 percent, about the same percentage as four years ago. But the 371,256 voters is fewer than 2008 when more than 400,000 Shelby County voters cast ballots. The percentage is about the same because there are fewer registered voters in Shelby County than there were four years ago after a purge by election officials.

Crews Holdings has filed a $1.5 million loan through Triumph Bank on 34 lots in Wolf River Ranch Planned Development in Collierville.

22. On the Rise -

Developers and homebuilders in South Fayette County have rolled out the red carpet for potential buyers by launching a home show that features more than 20 houses in Rossville and Piperton.

Since there were no plans for a fall Vesta Home Show, organizers of the 2010 South Fayette County Parade of Homes felt it would be a great opportunity to showcase their homes – and further appeal to prospects by highlighting the county’s low property tax.

23. Builder Optimistic About C’ville Subdivision -

Starting homes in the middle of January – and in the middle of a housing slowdown – might not seem like the wisest approach, but John Worley said the stars are aligned right as he begins the second phase of the Woodgrove Subdivision in Collierville.

25. Woodgrove Files Loan For Four Collierville Homes -

Woodgrove Homes LLC, whose principals are longtime homebuilders Barry Watson and John Worley, have bought four lots in the Oak Grove Woodgrove Planned Development in Collierville and filed a $1.3 million construction loan through BancorpSouth Bank to start homes there.

26. Byrnes to Take MAHBA Reins -

Tommy Byrnes of Byrnes Ostner Investments Inc. will serve as 2010 president of the Memphis Area Home Builders Association, the group’s executive director, Don Glays, said this week.

27. What People Want -

At one time, the quintessential image for the homebuilding industry was a busy job site where contractors and subcontractors worked on everything from a home’s framing to its plumbing, from its wiring to its roofing.

28. Building Permit Activity Abysmal in June -

Home permits continued to slide in June, reaching their lowest monthly mark in years as the demand for new housing remained soft and the building industry remained focused on sales.

Builders filed just 17 permits in Shelby County last month, down 77 percent from 74 permits in June 2008 and down 57.5 percent from 40 permits filed in May, according to the latest data from real estate information company Chandler Reports, www.chandlerreports.com.

29. MAHBA Mothballs First-Time Buyer Program -

As if builders didn’t have enough headaches, a new program launched last month by the Memphis Area Home Builders Association to increase home sales had to be scrapped because of a legality.

Don Glays and Stephen Hodgkins, MAHBA executive director and president, respectively, said a program in which the trade association would lend $8,000 of down payment money to homebuyers and recoup the money through the federal tax credit was rejected by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget.

30. County Commission To Vote on Appointments -

The Shelby County Board of Commissioners is expected today to approve several appointments to boards and commissions.

Among the approvals that are expected are Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton Jr.’s nomination of Tracy R. Chism for appointment to the Shelby County Health, Education and Housing Facility Board. Also on the slate are Wharton’s nominations of Anthony Tate and Lee Askew III for appointment to the Shelby County Healthcare Corp. and Michael Adrian Davis and Marc E. Willis for appointment to the Memphis and Shelby County Music Commission.

31. U.S. Bank Takes Lead as County’s Top Home Seller -

For the first time this year, Deutsche Bank National Trust Co. didn’t lead Shelby County as the top seller of homes.

After being No. 1 each of the first five months of 2008, the New York-based trust company was knocked from its top spot in June by Minneapolis-based U.S. Bank NA, according to the most recent Residential Sellers report by real estate information company Chandler Reports, www.chandlerreports.com.

More than 10 years after bulldozers first moved dirt in Collierville’s Wolf River Ranch, the end is in site for the residential portion of the 350-acre planned development as the final phase of homes nears completion.

The homebuilding industry has taken so many public relations hits in the form of failing companies and sagging sales that Shelby County's latest round of figures doesn't seem too terrible by comparison.
