1. Malco Moves Forward With Adjusted South Main Theater Plans -

The Malco Powerhouse Cinema proposed for Downtown’s South Main Historic Arts District is still a go, despite delays that have already pushed it well past its expected opening day.

But the roughly $8 million project is going to look a little different than initially proposed, Malco officials disclosed recently, due to projected costs that came back much too high.

3. Plans Revealed for $55 Million Central Station Project -

Conceptual plans were revealed Friday for the widely anticipated redevelopment of Central Station.

Archie Willis of Community Capital and developer Henry Turley outlined the $55 million plan for the finance committee of the Memphis Area Transit Authority.

4. Harahan Bridge Could Get Brighter -

Memphis civic and business leaders are in the early stages of talking with an anonymous donor about lighting the Harahan Bridge while a Memphis-based movie theater titan is exploring building a new theater Downtown.

5. Lasting Legacies -

A FedEx commercial that never made it past the storyboard stage portrayed company founder, chairman and CEO Fred Smith as a child filling out an order form in the back of a comic book for a batch of Sea-Monkeys, sending it off and waiting for the delivery.

6. Survival of the Fittest -

Back in 2010, as the video rental giant Blockbuster was circling the drain in the wake of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, the irony was inescapable to Matt Martin.

Martin, co-owner of Black Lodge Video in Memphis, told a reporter for the Christian Science Monitor how Blockbuster employees “literally laughed in our faces” when the independent video rental shop first opened its doors.

7. Malco Acquires Kentucky Theater -

Memphis-based Malco Theatres has acquired a nine-screen movie theater in Winchester, Ky., from Bluegrass Theatres.

The cinema has been reopened as the Malco Winchester Cinema and will undergo major renovations over the next few months. Jimmy Tashie, Malco executive vice president of theater operations, said the company is making “a significant financial investment” in the new facility.

Memphis-based Malco Theatres is raising the curtains on a new 12-screen cinema in Olive Branch, as the company continues to push deeper into new markets while at the same time investing in its existing properties.

10. Malco Theatres Opening New Locations -

Malco Theatres is in the midst of a growth spurt.

The Memphis-based movie chain has acquired a shuttered 10-screen movie theater and outdoor amphitheater in Oxford, Miss. It’s in Oxford Commons, a 480-acre mixed-use commercial, residential, hospitality and entertainment development in the North Mississippi town.

11. Luncheon To Honor’s City’s Cinematic Stars -

Film director Craig Brewer, “Undefeated” star Bill Courtney, and Memphis and Shelby County Film and Television Commissioner Linn Sitler are among those who’ll be honored Wednesday, May 9, as Carnival Memphis salutes the Mid-South’s movie and film industry during its annual Business & Industry Salute Luncheon.

12. Blockbuster Season -

Memphis’ Malco chain of theaters is in the final stages of converting its more than 300 screens to digital technology, a pricey upgrade that could broaden Malco’s ability to showcase more of the 3-D blockbusters Hollywood is primed to keep pumping out.

13. Digital-Age Marketing -

People who are going to a Malco movie theater this weekend to see Hillary Swank as a lawyer in “Conviction” or big budget stars like Bruce Willis fighting bad guys in “Red” may notice a few changes around them.
