Incumbent Shelby County Schools board members Billy Orgel and Chris Caldwell have pulled qualifying petitions to seek re-election to the nonpartisan positions in the August elections.

Caldwell faces a challenge in District 1 from Michael Scruggs, a motivational speaker, and Katherine Ayers, who have each pulled a petition for the race.

8. DeSoto County Supervisor Killed in ATV Accident -

HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) – DeSoto County Supervisor Harvey Wayne Lee has died an all-terrain vehicle accident south of Hernando, Mississippi.

County Coroner Jeff Pounders said the accident occurred Tuesday night on a county road. Pounders said the 54-year-old Lee was transported the emergency room at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto, where he died.

9. Harris Files Ford Challenge at Deadline -

Memphis City Council member Lee Harris is challenging Democratic state Sen. Ophelia Ford in the August primary for District 29, the Senate seat held by a member of the Ford family since 1975.

Any time a patient hugs me or shakes my hand and tells me how much they appreciate my efforts is the greatest feeling.

Don Pounds, senior vice president and chief financial officer of Baptist Memorial Health Care Corp., has been elected to serve on the board of Novation LLC, the health care supply contracting company for VHA, University HealthSystem Consortium and Provista LLC.
Since coming to Baptist in 1987, Pounds has served in a variety of roles, starting as chief financial officer at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County.

17. Treadway Joins Thomas & Betts as Senior VP for Electrical Business -

Charles L. Treadway has joined Thomas & Betts Corporation in the newly created position of senior vice president, group president – electrical. Treadway will provide strategic and operational leadership to the company’s electrical products businesses on a global basis. The electrical segment of Thomas & Betts has approximately 60 manufacturing and distribution facilities in 11 countries and employs approximately 8,000 associates worldwide. The electrical segment reported $2.1 billion in revenues in 2008. Treadway previously served as president and chief executive officer for the Custom Sensors and Technology unit of Schneider Electric.

Linda Martin has joined UT Medical Group Inc. as vice president of corporate compliance.

19. Settlement Funds To Honor Cauley -

It was the kind of gathering you normally wouldn’t associate with the settlement of a class action case involving urethane.

Several hours in advance of the hearing before Circuit Court Judge Jerry Stokes last week, some of those who would benefit from the settlement gathered at the Glassman, Edwards, Wade & Wyatt PC law firm across from Court Square in Downtown.

20. White Joins Junior Achievement As Exchange City Manager -

Michael White has joined Junior Achievement of Memphis and the Mid-South as Exchange City manager.

Previously, White has served in various youth development positions in the community including as a YMCA youth counselor and director of the Stax Music Academy Summer Camp. He earned a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Memphis.

21. Celeb Trademark Issues at Root of Three Separate Lawsuits -

Call it the battle of the brands. Since late April, three recognizable, high-profile Memphis music entities - Newby's, Sun Studio and Elvis Presley Enterprises - all have gone to court within weeks of each other in a series of unrelated cases that all have one thing in common.

Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz PC has named Kristine L. Roberts its Memphis Pro Bono Attorney of the Year. Roberts was honored for her work as a volunteer with the Attorney of the Day Courthouse Advice Clinic at the Shelby County Courthouse. She also is handling a case for Memphis Area Legal Services. Roberts serves on the Access to Justice Committee of the Memphis Bar Association and volunteers as a judge for educational mock trial events.

David Popwell has been hired by First Horizon National Corp. to lead First Tennessee Bank in Memphis and surrounding areas. Popwell formerly seved as chairman, president and CEO of SunTrust Memphis.

Keith Morris of 4M Land Co. in Somerville was honored with the 2005 Land Realtor of America award by the Realtors Land Institute. Morris, current president of the Tennesseen RLI chapter, is the first Tennessean to receive the award. He graduated from the University of Memphis.

25. Baker Donelson Names New President, COO -

Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz PC announced that Jerry Stauffer was selected to serve as the firm's president and chief operating officer. Stauffer formerly served as chairman of the firm's litigation department, as a director of the firm and most recently as managing shareholder. Baker Donelson also announced that Mark Glover was named to a second term as managing shareholder. Ben Adams will continue to serve as board chairman and CEO.
