TUPELO, Miss. (AP) – Elvis Presley's Mississippi hometown could create a tourism partnership with the German city where he lived while serving in the U.S. Army.

Presley was born in 1935 in Tupelo. From 1958 to 1960, the king of rock 'n' roll lived in Bad Nauheim, near Frankfurt in what was then West Germany.

3. Germantown To Fund School Deferred Maintenance -

Germantown Mayor Mike Palazzolo will propose more city capital funding in his upcoming budget proposal for renovation and maintenance of schools in the Germantown Municipal School District.

Palazzolo announced the move this week at the groundbreaking for construction of the new $27 million, 110,000-square-foot Germantown Elementary School on Forest Hill-Irene Road south of Poplar Pike.

17. Music, Rec Facilities in the Works at U of M -

The Tennessee Board of Regents is helping pave the way for the University of Memphis to build a $44 million on-campus music center instead of an already approved biochemistry and biology building.

The TBR has granted the U of M’s request to substitute the music center building project for an earlier request to build a $36 million biochemistry and biology building. Coming in at 40,000 square feet, the music center would be located along Central Avenue, near the school’s Holiday Inn. The request was granted at the Tennessee Board of Regents’ quarterly meeting in Chattanooga Sept. 15-16.

Westside Mobile Home Park at 8393 U.S. 51 N. in Millington has sold for $3.3 million. Jason W. Hutchison and Angela B. Hutchison, doing business as Trio Properties, purchased the 36.3-acre site in a July 1 warranty deed from Forbess Properties, a partnership between Robert A. Forbess and Michael E. Forbess.

28. BankTennessee Breaks Ground In Middle Tennessee -

Collierville-based BankTennessee is breaking ground on a new site in Lebanon, Tenn., later this month that will serve as the bank’s Middle Tennessee headquarters.

The groundbreaking on the 7,200-square-foot headquarters will happen June 25 at the property, a 1.85-acre site across from Lebanon High School. The bank’s announcement of its new presence in the town comes on the heels of a period of growth for BankTennessee, which enjoyed one of the best years in its history in 2012 and is looking to its future by focusing on the secret sauce it’s employed for almost 80 years – a commitment to local service.

The first time Jason Levien visited Memphis, it was the summer of 1996. He was here to help his friend and law school classmate Harold Ford Jr. run for Congress, so Levien helped him campaign – and slept on Ford’s sofa.

Three Class A speculative office buildings have broken ground in Germantown at McVay Road and Poplar Pike.

The $3.5 million development, named McVay Station Professional Center, is by Jason Speed, local developer and contractor whose claim to fame was Corporate Gardens, a $24 million, 148,000-square-foot retail and office park delivered in 2001 on 14 acres at Forest Hill Irene Road and Poplar Pike.

Tom Stewart has been named senior vice president and manager of the small business administration division at Magna Bank. Since joining Magna in March, Stewart has led the bank in obtaining national preferred lending provider status. In his new role, Stewart will oversee all business development activities for the Mid-South along with portfolio management and loan servicing.

38. Preventive Care: It's Free, Except When It's Not -

CHICAGO (AP) – Bill Dunphy thought his colonoscopy would be free.

His insurance company told him it would be covered 100 percent, with no copayment from him and no charge against his deductible. The nation's 1-year-old health law requires most insurance plans to cover all costs for preventive care including colon cancer screening. So Dunphy had the procedure in April.

An extensive rehab has begun on the old warehouse at 109 S. Second St., at the northwest corner of Second Street and Gayoso Avenue.

46. Main Street’s ‘Big Hole’ Reaches Symbolic Milestone -

Today’s topping off ceremony for what once was a giant hole at 100 S. Main St. represents a milestone. By next summer, the property will be the site of a parking garage and 92 apartment units.

The development team of the Barboro Flats mixed-used building at 100 S. Main St. Downtown has filed an $8 million permit with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement to begin the second phase of the project, which is the multifamily component.

51. Collierville Lowe’s Closer to Fruition -

After four years of starts and stops, Lowe’s is coming to Collierville.

Mooresville, N.C.-based Lowe’s Home Centers Inc. on Friday paid $4.1 million for 16.61 acres of land along New Byhalia Road in Collierville, clearing the way for the home improvement giant to build its first store in the town of about 40,000 people.

52. Main Street’s Big Hole To Be Filled at Last -

Center City Commission president Jeff Sanford knew some developers and others doubted anything would get built anytime soon in the big hole at Gayoso Avenue and Main Street.

53. 100 S. Main to See Progress This Week -

The long development process and occasional setbacks that have come with filling what's been referred to as the giant hole on Main Street have taken several years to work through. But a new five-story mixed-use development is planned for the site - a project that was given the green light last year - and construction could begin as soon as early fall.

56. Has Cordova Maxed Itself Out? -

For 15 years, starting in 1988, Earl Huffman ran a lunchtime eatery near Brooks Road and Airways Boulevard called Bluff City Deli.

He kept customers coming back by offering quality and bargains such as the winter special he once ran, a hot soup and sandwich for $2.89. When business began drifting east, he dutifully uprooted his deli and followed customers to a new spot in Cordova.

57. South Main Area Sees More Development -

One particular block in the South Main Arts District has become the epicenter of a development explosion.

And part of the driving force behind it is developer Stephen Turgeon, who over the past few months has been managing several condominium and townhome projects going up around the intersection of Front Street and Vance Avenue.
