1. Memphis Surgeon Kelly Honored By Pediatric Orthopaedic Society -

Dr. Derek M. Kelly, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, has been awarded the Special Effort and Excellence Award from the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America.

2. UT-Campbell Clinic Taps Department Chair -

Campbell Clinic pediatric orthopaedic surgeon Dr. James Beaty has been named the chair of the UT-Campbell Clinic Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Biomedical Engineering in the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

Kirkland Bible has joined family law firm Shea Moskovitz & McGhee as an associate. In her new position, Bible will represent clients in a variety of family law matters, including divorce, post-divorce and child custody matters.

5. State Board to Review Historic Register Nominations -

The State Review Board will meet Wednesday in Nashville to examine nominations for the National Register of Historic Places, including Memphis’ Sears Crosstown building, formally known as the Sears Roebuck and Company Catalog Distribution Center and Retail Store.

6. McFarland Named VP At Visible Music College -

Christy McFarland has been named the vice president of business at Visible Music College. Previously the director of marketing, McFarland will now oversee VMC’s marketing/public relations, business and operational functions.

7. Architecture Inc.’s Schuermann Receives Chairman Appointment -

David M. Schuermann, AIA, NCARB, principal at Architecture Inc., has been named chairman of the Tennessee Board of Architectural and Engineering Examiners.

8. Real Estate Commission Issues Insurance Fines -

During its May meeting, the Tennessee Real Estate Commission slapped more fines on real estate agents who failed to maintain errors and omissions insurance.

Eleven agents received fines for not having the insurance. The commission at its April meeting had fined more than 70 agents for failing to maintain the insurance.

9. Campbell Clinic Celebrates 100 Years -

The medical practice Dr. Willis Campbell founded in Memphis in 1909 ushered the medical device industry into the city and continues to keep the Mid-South at the forefront of orthopedics.

10. Stallworth Named Board President At Association of Fundraising Professionals -

Virginia Stallworth is the new president of the board of directors for the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Stallworth has served on the board since 2005. She is the associate director at the Memphis Child Advocacy Center, where she has worked for nine years. Stallworth also serves on the board of directors for the Memphis Area Women's Council.

11. A Symbiotic Relationship -

University of Memphis undergraduate Candice Smoots soon will be using about $200,000 worth of high-tech medical equipment that belongs to the InMotion Musculoskeletal Institute.

Smoots, a senior biology major, works in the Integrated Microscopy Center (IMC) at the U of M, and is exactly the type of student the equipment was meant for when InMotion decided to place it at the university, said Sharon Frase, associate director of the IMC.

12. National Honor Hints at More Biotech Buzz -

In the push to land more national recognition for Memphis' emerging biotech industry, here's another development to mark down in the win column.

At next month's annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) in San Diego, a Memphis surgeon will take the reins as president of the 29,000-member group - one of the highest honors that can be given to an orthopedic surgeon.

13. Handorf Named President of State Medical Association -

Dr. Charles R. Handorf has been named the 152nd president of the Tennessee Medical Association. Handorf is president of Duckworth Pathology Group and professor and chair of the department of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine.

14. Jones and Colleagues Receive LEED Accreditation from Green Building Council -

Michael Grey Jones, Chris Root and Karen Cauthen have received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accreditation. Jones is an architect for Johnson Bailey Henderson NcNeel Architects, and Root and Cauthen are architectural interns. Created by the U.S. Green Building Council, the LEED Green Building Rating System is a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings.
