More than a few bread crumbs on the direction the Fairgrounds redevelopment proposal is … well, developing after the second of three very important public forums last week by City Hall. The signs indicate a water park or surf park is highly unlikely, the gym at Maxine Smith STEAM Academy would go to open up Central Avenue frontage and a new gym built behind Kroc Center, a hotel by the Children’s Museum and the high school football field and track oval move from Central to where Libertyland used to be. And the city says none of this is set in stone even if it does show up on a tentative site plan among the exhibits last week.

Tuesday, September 12, 2017
There are some very interesting and unexpected things happening around Memphis these days. And it is into that atmosphere that Amazon put out what amounts to a cattle call for cities across the country to apply to be the site of its $5 billion second North American headquarters with 50,000 job over several years promised. This in a city that is about to start moving on a $9 billion expansion by St. Jude that is about $1 billion capital and the rest research and technology and programming money. This may be the ultimate litmus test of how far we are from our once legendary inferiority complex.

Last Word: Carson Cancels, Haslam Endorses, Bank Numbers and Kobe's Exit -
Friday, February 26, 2016
Presidential campaigns and the security concerns that come with them aren’t something that comes up a lot in terms of press coverage in this election cycle.
But it has come up leading into what will be a busy weekend locally and in the region among the presidential contenders.
Republican candidate Ben Carson was scheduled to attend both Sunday services at Highpoint Church in East Memphis.
Leaders of the church emphasized it was a non-political event in which Carson would talk about his personal story and his faith but would not make a political pitch.
This is not unprecedented.
In 2008, Republican contender Mike Huckabee attended an ordination ceremony for two ministers at Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova – an event that was billed also as a nonpolitical event.
And so the reporters who came to cover the candidate who would win the Tennessee Republican primary days later watched not from the sanctuary but from the room where Bellevue’s video and audio feeds are coordinated. Huckabee talked politics with reporters after the service as he made a run for some barbecue to-go from Corky’s on his way to another city on the campaign trail.

Notes From Near and Far on Death of Blues Legend B.B. King -
Saturday, May 16, 2015
Blues legend B.B. King died late Thursday at his Las Vegas home. Here are some comments from people who knew and admired him:
"The blues has lost its king, and America has lost a legend. B.B. King was born a sharecropper's son in Mississippi, came of age in Memphis, Tennessee, and became the ambassador who brought his all-American music to his country and the world. No one worked harder than B.B. No one inspired more up-and-coming artists. No one did more to spread the gospel of the blues. He gets stuck in your head, he gets you moving, he gets you doing the things you probably shouldn't do – but will always be glad you did." – President Barack Obama
