Welcome back to the work week and however much this is a grind, you are probably having a better work week than David Fizdale who suddenly got the ax from the Grizz front office Monday afternoon. This was not altogether unexpected following a vocal post-game dissent from Marc Gasol after Big Spain came out of what wound up being a Sunday loss to Brooklyn in the fourth quarter – the latest in a string of losses after a strong start to the season by the Grizz.

With the Arlington vote count in and awaiting certification from the Shelby County Election Commission, it would seem a light election year in Shelby County is over.

The municipal elections were the only regularly scheduled elections in local politics this year.

3. One Alderman Upset, Two Re-Elected In Arlington Elections -

Two Arlington aldermen were re-elected in municipal elections Thursday, Sept. 21, that were the only scheduled elections of 2017 in Shelby County politics. And a third incumbent alderman was upset by his challenger as an outgoing interim alderman was elected to the Arlington school board.

The two sets of races in Arlington are the only regularly scheduled elections of an otherwise off-election year in Shelby County that has come to include two special elections elsewhere in the county.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Titans owner Bud Adams, who helped found the American Football League and whose battles for players helped lead to the merger with the NFL, has died. He was 90.

12. Suburban School Board Races Almost Set -

Races on the Nov. 6 ballot for six sets of suburban school boards took shape Thursday, Aug. 16, at the noon filing deadline for candidate qualifying petitions.

The candidates that made the deadline have another week to withdraw from the races if they wish.

13. Board to Make Ad Hoc Choices -

Countywide school board members meet Thursday, Aug. 16, to take another step toward the selection of a single superintendent to oversee the schools merger process.

The board meets at 5 p.m. at Overton High School before the latest in a series of public forums at the school on the proposed schools consolidation blueprint.

14. New Arlington Mayor Familiar With Schools Fight -

The incoming mayor of Arlington already had a busy political schedule that offered plenty of new political horizons.

Mike Wissman will be among the Shelby County Schools board members joining the countywide school board in approximately two weeks.

Shelby County Schools board member Mike Wissman is the new mayor of Arlington.

Wissman won the four-way hard fought race for mayor of the Shelby County town in a race in which the coming of schools consolidation became the dominant issue.

The race for mayor of Arlington intensified via Facebook in the gap between early voting and Election Day.

Thursday, Sept. 15, is Election Day in Arlington and Lakeland. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The town of Arlington has seen substantial growth in the last eight years. But the four contenders for Arlington mayor told several hundred people last week that the town isn’t yet at the point where it can or should make investments in a police force, a beefed-up fire department or a new library.

Before Memphis voters go to the polls this October to decide a mayor’s race, voters in Arlington will decide a four-way race for mayor in the Sept. 15 elections there.

The Memphis field of 10 includes candidates like incumbent Mayor A C Wharton Jr. and challenger James Harvey, who are relying on sophisticated computer software and lots of volunteers to turn out tens of thousands of people in early voting and on Election Day.

23. California-Based Investor Brings Two Hotels to Airport Area -

Yet another out-of-town real estate investor is pumping money into the local economy, further proof that Memphis remains attractive to outside interests.

This time it's Newport Beach, Calif.-based Chase Merritt LP, which is launching a pair of nationally branded hotels called Value Place on both sides of Memphis International Airport, according to The Daily News Online, www.memphisdailynews.com.
