13. Measure Increasing Seat Belt Fines Among New Tennessee Laws -

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Motorists in Tennessee who don't buckle up could face stiffer fines under one of many new Tennessee laws taking effect Friday.

The tougher seat belt law increases the fine for first-time offenders from $10 to $25 and from $20 to $50 for repeat offenders.

President Barack Obama has nominated U.S. Attorney Edward Stanton III to be a federal judge for the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee.

The nomination of Stanton, who has been the chief federal prosecutor for West Tennessee for five years, was announced Thursday, May 21, by U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen of Memphis, who recommended Stanton to the White House after convening a screening committee of local attorneys.

19. This week in Memphis history: Feb. 28-March 6 -

1974: On the front page of The Daily News, J.C. Penney Co. announced it would lease a new 508,700-square-foot hardware/automotive national distribution center in Southaven’s Freeport Industrial Park at State Line and Rostin roads. The center was being built by Boston-based Cabot, Cabot and Forbes Co. Southaven was still an unincorporated suburb at the time, governed by the DeSoto County government and growing in terms of economic development as growth in Whitehaven began to spill over across the state line. Southaven would be incorporated in 1981.

20. Collierville Mental Health Contractor Sentenced -

MEMPHIS (AP) – A federal judge in Memphis has sentenced a state contract mental health counselor to three years in prison for fraud.

The Department of Justice announced 44-year-old Dr. Mechelle D. Toles of Collierville was sentenced Tuesday on her guilty plea to one count of health care fraud.

21. Tennessee, Mississippi Men Imprisoned in Real Estate Scam -

MEMPHIS (AP) – Men from Tennessee and Mississippi have been sentenced to prison in what federal authorities called a real estate flipping scheme.

A U.S. District Court judge in Memphis this week handed prison terms of 33 months to 43-year-old Michael Pinkney of Cordova and 50-year-old Alan R. Price of Olive Branch, Miss.

Nancy Roberts has joined the Medical Education & Research Institute (MERI) as human resources coordinator.

Roberts joins MERI after working as vice president of organization development for a large apartment real estate investment trust. In addition, Roberts has more than 15 years of HR experience, including serving in the human resources capacity for a large retail operation and a large marketing firm.

30. U of M’s Preza Receives $740K Award for Research -

Dr. Chrysanthe Preza has received a more than $740,000 National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Award for her research to improve live cell imaging. Preza is an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Memphis’ Herff College of Engineering.

31. Tigyi Appointed UTHSC Physiology Chair -

Dr. Gabor Tigyi has been appointed chairman of the Department of Physiology in the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). Tigyi has been with UTHSC for 15 years. He was elected in 1984 to the 200-member Hungarian Academy of Sciences as a foreign member.

Eric Mathews was named associate director of corporate research and development at the University of Memphis FedEx Institute of Technology. Mathews previously served FIT in temporary roles directing research and business development and was part of the institute's founding executive management. He earned a bachelor's degree from Rhodes College and a master's degree from the University of Memphis.
