WASHINGTON (AP) – It's a rare honor for an artist to receive accolades from the president, let alone have him sing one of your tunes.

Now Al Green can claim both, knowing that President Barack Obama is a fan. Green is among five artists receiving this year's Kennedy Center Honors, the national awards for influencing American culture through the arts, the center announced Thursday.

An ambitious effort to reconfigure Memphis International Airport for the future will get underway this fall, when demolition of portions of two concourses begins and a single concessions vendor takes control.

11. Endocrinologist Detti Joins UT Medical Group -

Reproductive endocrinologist Dr. Laura Detti has joined the Germantown office of UT Medical Group Inc., where she specializes in male and female infertility. Detti provides genetic diagnosis and counseling; management of conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, recurrent miscarriages and premature menopause; and pre- and post-cancer care for fertility issues.

Although the Memphis in May International Festival is widely known for its Beale Street Music Festival and World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, the festival’s focus on developing international economic trade and fostering Memphis companies’ global business relationships remains central to its mission.

After retiring from her nearly 30-year career at FedEx, African-American business executive Edith Kelly-Green embarked on an entrepreneurial venture when she bought 11 Lenny’s Sub Shop locations.

Three decades of working for a Fortune 500 corporation paved the way for her new enterprise as a franchisee.

16. Tigyi Appointed UTHSC Physiology Chair -

Dr. Gabor Tigyi has been appointed chairman of the Department of Physiology in the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). Tigyi has been with UTHSC for 15 years. He was elected in 1984 to the 200-member Hungarian Academy of Sciences as a foreign member.

When it comes to Lenny's Sub Shops, some people are just fanatics. They eat the same thing every time they go, maybe with a slight variation, but always the same thing, company officials say.

Those loyal customers have translated into a business that now is made up of 98 stores in 11 states, with 25 in Memphis.
