A wordier version of this column ran in 2008. That would have been shortly after the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette ran a certain editorial. In which it asserted that to say there are “no ifs, ands or buts” is wrong. The correct phrase, it averred, is “no ifs, ans or buts.”

Government data released for the first time last week showed that hospitals across the nation bill Medicare widely different amounts for the same procedures.
St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell, N.Y., charged $29,637 for patients who received a respiratory system diagnosis and remained on a ventilator more than 96 hours, while Stanford Hospital in Stanford Hospital, Calif., charged $929,119.

George T. "Buck" Lewis, a shareholder in the Memphis office of Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz PC, has been elected vice president of the Tennessee Bar Association.
Ellers, Oakley, Chester & Rike Inc. has hired Alan Otts as director of its plumbing and fire protection division. He previously served as head of the plumbing and fire protection department for Barham/Cain/Mynatt Inc. in Cordova. He is a member of the Memphis Joint Engineers Society, serving as its chairman from 2002-2004 and student contest chairman from 2004-2005. Otts also is on the technical advisory board for Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville.
