A new documentary on the 6-year-old Memphis Skate Park at Tobey Park takes a look at skate culture in Memphis and the struggle to get the park to reality after securing a grant that ran out and then securing city capital funding for it.

2. Waddell: 2017 a Year for ‘Shifting Gears’ -

David Waddell will be in Florida this week for a meeting with the very first client of his namesake Memphis-based investment firm, Waddell & Associates. On the same trip down there a year ago, Waddell recalls being encouraged to “be bold” in his decisions and leadership of the firm.

3. Arkansas All-American Walk-On Burlsworth Now the Subject of Film -

Black horn-rimmed glasses. Those were offensive lineman Brandon Burlsworth’s trademark, and they were prominent even behind the facemask of his Arkansas Razorbacks helmet.

Predictably, trash-talking opponents laughed at him and called him names. He was, with various modifiers, Clark Kent. Or Kurt Rambis, the funny-looking center for the Los Angeles Lakers. Or Drew Carey, the comedian.

4. Education Department Replaces Career College Chain Monitor -

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Education Department has appointed a new lawyer to oversee the turnaround of schools once owned by Corinthian Colleges Inc., following an Associated Press review that found trouble at the schools and questioned the previous monitor's independence.

5. Ramsey Clear in Push to Politicize Supreme Court -

Republican Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey has a penchant for igniting flames of partisanship, and the retirement of Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Gary Wade is no exception.

6. Rieger Begins Work at Memphis Chamber -

Tom Rieger recently joined the Greater Memphis Chamber as senior vice president of member development, a role in which he will oversee major fundraising activities, conduct membership drive campaigns and implement revenue enhancement opportunities.

7. Memphis Bar Judicial Poll Released -

The Memphis Bar Association poll of attorneys on the judicial races on the Aug. 7 ballot shows 16 percent to as high as 38 percent of the attorneys participating have no opinion in many of the judicial races.

8. Litigators, Alligators and Lawyers -

There comes a time in business when you need a courtroom attorney. This may be either to defend yourself or sue. The fun factor ranks right in there with seeing a urologist.

Good attorneys cost $250 to $300 an hour. Using one with his name on the firm costs more. It is not clear why one would be $250 an hour and another even $400 an hour, but the inference is the $400-an-hour one never loses or is married to the judge. A day in court costs $10,000.

9. Hampton Hotels Names Smith Senior Director of Product Service -

Kurt Smith has been named senior director of product service and development at Hampton Hotels. Previously, Smith served Hampton as director of global brand integration. Prior to that position, he was the director of hotel performance support.
