7. Aquarium Proposal for Mud Island Resurfaces After Pyramid Pitch -

The plan for an aquarium at Mud Island River Park is not the first time an aquarium has been proposed on the city’s riverfront.

“It was an interesting beginning. I was disappointed at the time,” said Peter Chermayeff of the original aquarium concept for the Pyramid, which never got as far as renderings or a concept plan.

Bernal E. Smith II, president and publisher of The New Tri-State Defender newspaper, died Sunday, Oct. 22, at his home, according to Smith’s family.

Smith, 45, oversaw the resurrection of the legacy African-American owned newspaper starting in 2010.

Former Tennessee Economic and Community Development Commissioner Randy Boyd got two mentions last Thursday, Feb. 23, at the Greater Memphis Chamber’s breakfast forum – one from guest speaker U.S. Rep. David Kustoff and another from chamber president Phil Trenary.

U.S. Rep. David Kustoff says former Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey was right in describing his 8th Congressional District as the most Republican of the state’s nine congressional districts.

12. Democratic and Republican Partisans Prepare for Next Election -

At least five potential Republican candidates for Governor in 2018 were among the crowd of 400 people at the Saturday, Feb. 25, Lincoln Day Gala of the Shelby County Republican Party.

Meanwhile, Nashville Mayor Megan Barry told a group of 150 Democrats at an “Obama Day” event Saturday that they and other Democrats across the state can elect one of their own as governor in 2018.

14. Corker to Speak at Chamber Luncheon -

The Greater Memphis Chamber’s industry councils will host U.S. Senator Bob Corker at their biannual Joint Council Meeting on Friday, May 15.

The event, which runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., will be held at the Hilton Memphis, 939 Ridge Lake Blvd.

In 2011, following the Great Flood of 2010, there was lesser flooding that affected a much smaller area. Then there was the hailstorm in 2012 that resulted in new roofs for thousands – if not tens of thousands – of homes in the area.

Dr. Henry “Hank” Sherman has joined Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics as a sports medicine family practice physician in its Southaven office. Sherman treats patients who suffer from a variety of orthopedic injuries – from competitive athletes looking to get back in the game to weekend warriors who want to stay active later in life.

20. Healthy Memphis Common Table Unveils New Name -

Healthy Memphis Common Table’s fourth annual meeting and recognition luncheon included the launch of a new name and logo and the honoring of the inaugural Health Impact Award recipients.

The new name is Common Table Health Alliance, and the selection of a new logo was an interactive process, with people at each table at the Thursday, May 22, luncheon voting for one of three possible logos. The winning logo will be made available for public distribution after it has been registered.

23. Healthy Church Challenge Tackles Obesity Epidemic -

BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee’s second annual Healthy Church Challenge 100-day weight loss competition for churches in West Tennessee is set to get under way on Saturday, Feb. 2.

This year’s challenge is anticipated to include more than 50 local churches that will get the chance to compete for cash prizes to benefit their churches and health ministries.

24. Magna Bank Taps Stewart To Lead SBA Division -

Tom Stewart has been named senior vice president and manager of the small business administration division at Magna Bank. Since joining Magna in March, Stewart has led the bank in obtaining national preferred lending provider status. In his new role, Stewart will oversee all business development activities for the Mid-South along with portfolio management and loan servicing.

31. Girls Inc. Receives Funds to Combat Infant Mortality -

As a neonatologist, Dr. Ramasubbareddy Dhanireddy is fluent in the language of medicine, but he doesn’t know teen talk.

Teenage leaders have agreed to translate his concerns and advice to help prevent young mothers from having low birth weight babies. The teen-led Infant Mortality Public Awareness Campaign (IMPAC) supports this effort with funding from the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Health Foundation.

34. MED Task Force Members Appointed -

Shelby County Interim Mayor Joyce Avery and County Commissioner Joe Ford, who will become county mayor Dec. 10, have appointed a task force to brainstorm short- and long-term solutions to the revenue crisis at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis.

35. Malone Gears Up for County Mayor Run -

Shelby County Commissioner Deidre Malone stood under a carport in Orange Mound earlier this week and kicked off her campaign for Shelby County mayor in 2010.

The timing of the campaign kickoff at her grandparents’ house with her mother, other family members and her friends in attendance had been planned months ago to follow the end of Malone’s year-long tenure as County Commission chairwoman. Malone turned over the chair Monday to fellow Commissioner Joyce Avery.

Center City Commission president Jeff Sanford knew some developers and others doubted anything would get built anytime soon in the big hole at Gayoso Avenue and Main Street.

37. Catch’em Lake Gets New Management -

Earlier this month, Agricenter International officials announced they would close Catch’em Lake while they searched for a new management company to operate its 10 bodies of water.

Cal’s Family Bait & Tackle, owned by Calvin Thomas, a former member of the Bar-Kays, had been managing the facility for about five years.

WKNO Public Broadcasting has named its new board members and officers.

The officers for the 2008-2009 board are William L. Taylor, chairman; Chuck Hughes, vice chairman; Dr. Craig Esrael, secretary; and Michael LaBonia, treasurer.

39. Shelby Farms' Potential Master Plans Unveiled Thurs. -

The public got its first look Thursday at three proposed plans for Shelby Farms Park.

The designs by Tom Leader Studio, Hargreaves Associates and Field Operations offer very different ideas for a master plan to come.

40. Three Firms Chosen To Submit Plans for Shelby Farms -

Three national design firms have been selected as finalists to create a master plan for Shelby Farms, park officials announced Tuesday morning at a press conference.

Shelby Farms Park Conservancy, the nonprofit organization that oversees the 4,500-acre park, narrowed the pool from 33 applicants after a month-long review process.
