1. Filling the Voids -

Last year was a banner year for adaptive reuse projects in Midtown and Downtown.

Developers announced plans for the Sears Crosstown building, Overton Square, Hotel Chisca, James Lee House and old United Warehouse in the South Main Historic Arts District. Construction began on The Pyramid, turning it into a 220,000-square-foot mega-Bass Pro Shop Outdoor World, and Memphis in May moved into its new headquarters at 56 S. Memphis Bioworks Foundation is working to renovate the old Holiday Inn building in Memphis Medical Center into a mixed-use facility.

Brandon Wellford, chief financial officer and director of real estate for Memphis Bioworks Foundation, said the vision is to redevelop the 12-story property with hotel space on the top; apartments for Memphis Medical Center students, staff and faculty in the mid-levels; and retail on the ground floor.

4. Bioworks Files $15M Permit for Specialized Laboratory -

Memphis Bioworks Foundation is planning to build Memphis Specialized Laboratory at 45 S. Dudley St., according to a $15.2 million permit application filed in September with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement. The project was confirmed by Brandon Wellford, Memphis Bioworks Foundation’s chief financial officer and director of real estate.

5. Luncheon to Address Union of Biosciences, Small Business -

Members of the city’s growing bioscience community will come together Thursday for a luncheon hosted by the Memphis Bioworks Business Association, a group dedicated to promoting and advancing the bioscience business community in the Memphis region through programs, events and strategic communications.

8. City, Bioworks Receive $30 Million In Tax Credits -

The Memphis Bioworks Foundation and the city of Memphis have new incentives to lure private investment to struggling areas with a $30 million allocation of New Markets Tax Credits.

The allocation is the largest ever received through this program by a Tennessee-based institution. The program is administered by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Community Development Financial Institutions Fund.

9. Head Selected as Director Of SWTCC Library -

Carolyn Head has been selected to serve as executive director of Library Services for Southwest Tennessee Community College.

10. Le Bonheur Expansion Project Proceeds in Earnest -

No credit crunch or recession will keep Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare from leading the way toward a greener future, said David Rosenbaum, vice president of facility management.

The financing is as solid as the concrete for the new $327 million Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center. It is designed to withstand a magnitude 7.0 earthquake and accommodate green technologies.

11. AgBioworks Sets New Crops Conference -

Alternative crops will be the focus of a two-day conference to be held Nov. 12-13 at Fogelman Executive Conference Center on the University of Memphis campus.

“There’s a lot of corporate interest in new products being developed in terms of bioproduce and biofuel,” said Brandon Wellford of the Memphis Bioworks Foundation.
