3. Artist Cat Peña Named Director Of CBU’s Ross Gallery - Wednesday, August 23, 2017

Cat Peña, a Memphis-based artist, arts administrator and independent public art consultant, has been named director of the Beverly & Sam Ross Gallery at Christian Brothers University. As an artist, Peña’s work in recent years has centered on public art installations, including “There’s More To Be Proud Of,” a canopy of metallic streamers on display in the Edge District through next February. In addition, she is the founder of Collabortory, a creative platform that expands public art practices through collaborative and social practices.

4. B.B. King Memorial to Be Dedicated Friday on Beale - Friday, September 16, 2016

After years of discussion, the Beale Street Entertainment District on Friday, Sept. 15, gets a monument in honor of the late blues legend B.B. King who began his career on Beale Street in the late 1940s.

5. Once QB Country, SEC Now Has Only A Few Proven Players at the Position - Friday, August 26, 2016

At SEC Media Days this summer in Hoover, Ala., the 14 head coaches brought along more starting offensive linemen (5) than starting quarterbacks (3). Such is the state of the most high profile position in the Southeastern Conference at the beginning of the 2016 college football season.

6. Gibson Guitar Sculpture Project Seeks Artists - Saturday, April 23, 2016

A set of 20 Gibson guitar sculptures will begin showing up at various sites in Memphis later this year as part of a “GuitarTown” public art project.

The project by the Gibson Foundation, the nonprofit philanthropic division of Gibson Brands, is currently seeking applications from artists to customize the 10-foot-tall replicas of Gibson Lucille brand guitars for the GuitarTown project.

Letters have been going out over the past few weeks to church leaders, beauty shops and other South Memphis businesses, alerting them in part to the colorful new mural that artist Brandon Marshall has painted on the east wall at 960 South Bellevue Blvd.

9. Graffiti Green Light - Saturday, January 9, 2016

Brandon Marshall is a full-time artist, making a living painting commissioned murals for clients. He’s also well-versed in the graffiti world of Memphis, a small but determined group of artists who tag properties around the city.

10. Struggling Titans Step Up Their Game for Mularkey - Saturday, December 12, 2015

The biggest positive for the 2015 Titans is that they continue to fight.

Their record – 3-9 – is terrible, not a marked improvement over last year’s 2-14 debacle. But the Titans have not folded on a regular basis, as they did a year ago when they lost nine games by two touchdowns or more.

Five Memphis-area artists will be the first recipients of ArtsAccelerator grants, created earlier this year by ArtsMemphis to help individual working artists in the field of visual arts.

The winners are Ben Butler, Mary Jo Karimnia, Susan Maakestad, Brandon Marshall, and Terri Phillips. Each artist will receive a $3,000 ArtsAccelerator grant, and all projects will be completed by August 2014.
